Seasons and driving

May to September for long days, open mountain roads and the easiest driving. September and October for autumn colours and the first northern lights.

From October to April the car is a 4x4 for 1–2 travellers (larger groups get a Kia Sportage 4x4). The north and east have more snow than the south: Road 862 to Dettifoss and the road over Tröllaskagi (day 4) can close in storms, and we give you a shorter winter route for those days. Daylight is 4–6 hours in December and January, so the longest days (3, 7 and 8) start in the dark. Check road.is and vedur.is every morning.

Payment and cancellation

  • Book at least 14 days before arrival
  • 20% deposit when you book
  • Balance due 45 days before arrival. Bookings made less than 45 days before arrival are paid in full.

  • One free date change up to 30 days before arrival, subject to availability.
  • We recommend travel insurance that covers cancellation (illness, flight changes).

Good to know

Is 10 days enough for the Ring Road?

Yes. Ten days is the most popular length for the full circle. This route adds two nights on Snæfellsnes and keeps every day under 4.5 hours of driving. If you want a glacier hike, add an extra night near Skaftafell.

Can we drive the Ring Road in winter?

Yes, but plan for weather. From October to April we include a 4x4, and we give you a winter version of days 3, 4 and 6 if roads in the north close. Daylight is short in December and January, so May to September is easier for a first trip.

Which way round do we drive?

Clockwise: Snæfellsnes and the north first, then the east and the South Coast. You end with the Golden Circle, close to the airport, so you are never far from Keflavík on the last day.

Which hotels will we stay in?

You choose Budget, Comfort or Superior. We book hotels on Snæfellsnes, in Skagafjörður, Akureyri, Mývatn, Egilsstaðir, Höfn, the Vík area and the Golden Circle, and send the names with your confirmation. If a hotel is full, we book one of the same standard nearby and tell you first.

Can we add nights or tours?

Yes. Add tours to each day when you book, or ask us for extra nights, for example near Skaftafell for a glacier hike or in Reykjavík at the end.
