2-day South Coast tours: add Jökulsárlón and the Diamond Beach

With one night on the South Coast you can go much further than a day tour: past Vík to Skaftafell, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon with its floating icebergs and the Diamond Beach, where the ice washes up on black sand. Two days also means more time at each stop, a hotel in the countryside and, from October to April, a chance of the Northern Lights away from the city lights.

Private South Coast tours with a local guide

On a private South Coast tour it is just your group, with one of our own local guides, born and raised in Iceland. You choose the pick-up time, how long to stay at each stop and whether to add something extra, like Kvernufoss, the plane wreck or the Katla ice cave. We are a small family company, and the guide on our private tours is part of our own team. The price is per vehicle for your whole group, so for a family or a group of friends it can cost less per person than you might expect.

South Coast tours in winter and summer

South Coast or Golden Circle?

If you have only one day, the Golden Circle is shorter (about 8 hours) and covers Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir area and Gullfoss. The South Coast is a longer day (10 to 14 hours) with waterfalls you can get close to, the black sand beach and glaciers. With two days, do both. Can you do the South Coast of Iceland in one day?

Yes. A South Coast day tour from Reykjavík takes 10 to 14 hours and reaches Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara black sand beach and Vík. To see the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon as well, choose a 2-day tour, because it is about 5 hours’ drive from Reykjavík each way.

How much does a South Coast tour cost?

Our South Coast day tours start from about 15,990 ISK per person. Tours with a glacier hike, ice cave or lagoon cost more, 2-day tours start from about 77,361 ISK, and private tours are priced per group, from 140,000 ISK.

How long is the drive from Reykjavík to the South Coast?

About 1 hour 45 minutes to Seljalandsfoss, 2 hours to Skógafoss and 2 hours 45 minutes to Vík. Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is about 5 hours away.

Do South Coast tours pick up from my hotel?

Most of our South Coast tours from Reykjavík include pick-up from your accommodation or a nearby bus stop. Each tour page shows the pick-up options.

Is Reynisfjara beach dangerous?

Yes, the waves can be. Sneaker waves can run far up the beach with no warning. Stay well back from the water, never turn your back on the sea and follow the warning lights at the entrance. With a guide you will be told where it is safe to stand.

Can I walk behind Seljalandsfoss?

Usually from late spring to autumn. In winter the path is often closed or icy. You will get wet from the spray, so bring a waterproof jacket.

Can I see Jökulsárlón on a South Coast day tour?

Not on a standard day tour. It is too far for a normal day there and back. Choose a 2-day South Coast tour, or a long private day tour to Jökulsárlón.

What is the best time of year for a South Coast tour?

Any time. Summer has long days, green landscapes and puffins. Winter has ice caves, frozen waterfalls and the chance of the Northern Lights, but shorter days.

Do I need a guide for a glacier hike?

Yes. Glaciers have hidden crevasses, and walking on the ice is only safe with a trained glacier guide, crampons and an ice axe. All our glacier hike tours include the equipment.

Can I do a private South Coast tour?

Yes. On a private tour you have your own local guide and vehicle and you choose the pace and the stops. The price is per group.

What should I wear on a South Coast tour?

Warm layers, a waterproof jacket and trousers, and good walking shoes or boots. In winter add a hat, gloves and ice cleats if you have them.

Is the South Coast tour suitable for children?

Yes. The classic South Coast day tour is easy, with short walks at each stop. Glacier hikes and ice caves have minimum ages, shown on each tour page.
