Seljalandsfoss waterfallSeljalandsfossSeljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss drops 60 metres from what was once the edge of the coastline, before sea levels fell after the last ice age. The Seljalandsá river is fed by meltwater from Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano that erupted in 2010 and grounded flights across Europe. It is one of the few waterfalls in Iceland with a path behind the falling water, so expect to get wet and bring a waterproof jacket.

Skógafoss falls in one broad curtain about 60 metres high and 25 metres wide, right beside the village of Skógar. On sunny days the spray usually throws a rainbow, sometimes a double one, across the pool at its base. A staircase of 527 steps leads to a viewpoint at the top, where you can see the river before it drops. You can stand close to the base or climb the steep staircase to a viewpoint above it.

About the Katla ice cave tour from Reykjavík

This tour puts two of Iceland's most popular day trips into one long day. In the morning you drive east along the South Coast by minibus, stopping at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss and at the black sand beach near Vík. In Vík you switch to a Super Jeep for the Katla ice cave part of the day, which takes about 3 hours.

The Katla ice cave sits in Kötlujökull, an outlet of Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which covers the Katla volcano. The ice is striped black with volcanic ash from past eruptions, so it looks very different from the blue caves in Vatnajökull. After the jeep ride you walk about 20 minutes on sand and gravel, put on crampons and a helmet, and go into the cave with your guide.

It is a long day of about 12 hours, and you are back in Reykjavík around 8 pm. Most of the time is spent in the vehicle or on short walks, and the ice cave walk is easy for most people. The cave changes shape over the year, so its exact form depends on when you go. In winter daylight is short and roads can be icy, and the order of stops may change for weather and road conditions.

The best day of our trip to Europe. Katla Ice Cave is amazing and the waterfalls on the south coast also. Recommend this tour to anyone that has a full day in Iceland. Would be my number one choice.

Magnificent day tour!

We had magnificent time on this tour. South Iceland is absolutely beautiful. Both waterfalls and the black sand beach were simply stunning, just like on the photos but experiencing it is even more amazing. Then the Super Jeep ride up to the glacier and seeing Katla Ice Cave was an exceptional experience. I would recommend this tour to anyone!

Katla ice cave was magnificent

We had the best experience on this tour. Had heard mixed reviews of Katla Ice Cave but it was magnificent. The walk up to the ice cave was pretty easy, we got crampons that helped with walking on the ice. Guide was great. Would love to go woth him on another tour but he said he usually only does this tour.
