What to know before booking an ice cave tour

Natural blue ice caves, such as those found in Vatnajökull, form and change each year and are only safe to visit roughly from November to March, when the ice is stable and cold enough.

The Katla ice cave is a natural ice cave in Kötlujökull, an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, and tours run all year, making it the option if you are travelling outside the winter season. The man-made Into the Glacier tunnel in Langjökull is also open all year.

All ice cave tours require a certified guide and proper equipment, including crampons and a helmet, which are usually provided as part of the tour.

Wear warm layers and waterproof, sturdy footwear, since the ground can be wet and the cave itself is naturally cold.

Questions people ask

When can you visit ice caves in Iceland?

The blue natural ice caves in Vatnajökull are visited from about October to April, when it is cold enough for them to be safe. The Katla ice cave under Mýrdalsjökull is open all year.

Which ice cave is closest to Reykjavík?

Langjökull, about 2.5 hours away. Katla is about 2.5 hours away too (near Vík). The Vatnajökull caves are about 5 hours away, so most people combine them with a night in the south.

How much does an ice cave tour cost?

From about 18,500 ISK per person for a tour from Skaftafell or Jökulsárlón. Day tours from Reykjavík, which include the transfer, cost from about 35,500 ISK.

Can I visit a natural ice cave in summer?

Yes, at Katla. The blue ice caves in Vatnajökull and Langjökull are only visited in winter, because meltwater makes them unstable, but the natural Katla ice cave near Vík is visited all year. The man-made Into the Glacier tunnel in Langjökull is also open all year.

Is ice cave visiting safe?

With a certified guide and proper equipment, yes; this is why independent access is not allowed and all visits go through a guided tour.

Do I need previous experience?

No, most ice cave tours are suitable for beginners, though a reasonable level of fitness helps for the walk to reach the cave.

Do I need special clothes or equipment?

Wear warm layers, a waterproof jacket and hiking boots. Helmets and crampons are provided.

Can children visit an ice cave?

Yes, on most tours from age 6 to 8. The monster truck tour from Gullfoss takes children from age 4.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The glacier guides check conditions before every tour. If it is not safe, the tour is cancelled and you choose another date or a full refund.

Can I visit an ice cave without a guide?

No. Ice caves change all the time and can collapse, so always go with a certified glacier guide.

Is the Katla ice cave as blue as Vatnajökull?

Katla has black volcanic ash layered in the ice, which gives it a different, darker look. The brightest blue ice is in the Vatnajökull caves in mid-winter.
