The cave was carved by meltwater falling through the glacier, which is rare in Iceland and gives it a smooth, tunnel-like shape. Its shape and colour change with the conditions. Bring a phone or camera that you can hold with gloves on.

About the Sólheimajökull ice cave

Sólheimajökull is a tongue of the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap on the South Coast, and the closest natural ice cave to Reykjavík. This tour combines a proper glacier hike with a visit to a blue ice cave that is quite unusual: it was carved by a waterfall flowing through the glacier, which gives it a smooth, tunnel-like shape. It runs as a small group with certified glacier guides.

You meet at the base camp by the Sólheimajökull car park. Your guide fits you with crampons, a harness, a helmet and an ice axe and gives a short safety briefing. Then you walk out onto the glacier, across ridges and past deep crevasses, while your guide explains how the ice moves and why it is melting so fast. The cave is the highlight: time to take in the blue ice and take photos before you hike back to base camp. The whole tour takes about 4.5 hours.

This is a real glacier hike on uneven ice, so reasonable fitness and good hiking boots are needed, and the minimum age is 10. Ice caves are natural and change with the weather. If conditions are not safe, the tour may be cancelled at short notice, and the operator will try to offer another tour. There is no pick-up; you drive to the base camp yourself, which is easy if you are travelling along the South Coast.

Great Family Experience

We were a little nervous about hiking on a glacier, but our guide put us completely at ease. The walk was at a good pace, with lots of stops to learn about the glacier and take photos. The Solheimajokull Ice Cave was the most incredible sight—so blue and crystal-like. It’s amazing to think this cave changes every season. Our teenagers loved it too, which says a lot! Great family adventure.

Unforgettable Ice Cave Tour

This was a bucket-list moment for me. I’ve seen photos of Iceland’s ice caves for years, but being inside the Solheimajokull Ice Cave in person is something else entirely. It’s colder than you think, but so worth it! The hike was challenging at times but very doable, and the guide made sure everyone was comfortable and safe. The equipment they provided was high quality and made me feel secure walking on the ice. Truly unforgettable.
