The cave sits in Kötlujökull, one of the outlet glaciers of Katla. The ice carries dark ash from the volcano, so the colours inside range from deep blue to black bands. You spend about 1 hour here. It is not recommended if you are uncomfortable in tight or dark spaces.

About the Katla ice cave private tour

Katla is one of Iceland's most active volcanoes, sitting under the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. This private tour takes you from Vík by super jeep across rough glacier terrain to a natural ice cave inside Kötlujökull, one of Katla's outlet glaciers. Because the cave sits on black volcanic ice rather than the clear ice found further east, the colours inside range from deep blue to streaked black.

The tour is private, so it runs on your own schedule with just your group and a driver-guide. After the drive, you walk for around ten minutes to reach the cave entrance, then spend roughly an hour inside exploring the ice formations before returning to Vík.

This cave is described as natural and ever-changing, and the operator runs it year-round rather than only in winter, which is unusual for ice caves in Iceland. Expect some uneven walking (about 2 km in total) and a set of steps with a rope handrail near the cave; it is not recommended if you are uncomfortable in tight, dark spaces.

Helmet and crampons are provided, but you should bring your own waterproof outerwear, hiking boots and warm layers, since conditions inside a glacier cave are cold even on a mild day at sea level.

family time at the ice cave

We took this private Katla Ice Cave tour with our teen daughter and it was one of our best family experiences. The guide was exceptional, patient, explained everything so we understood ice formation, loud cracks, glacier movement. Private made it feel personal, special.

Adventure

Definitely cold, but so worth it. The ice cave under Katla is spectacular. Private guide was great — very professional, very reassuring. Loved the rugged terrain, the contrast of ice and volcanic ash. A day for the books.

La mejor excursión privada al hielo

La cueva de Katla fue increíble. El guía privado era excepcional: explicaba cada capa de hielo, cada historia del volcán, nos cuidaba mucho. Una experiencia íntima, sin prisas, que nunca olvidaré.
