The Super Jeep leaves the Ring Road and follows rough tracks for about 30 minutes towards the edge of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull. The tracks change from season to season with the ice, which is why a Super Jeep is used.

About the crystal ice cave tour

Every winter, meltwater rivers carve tunnels under the edge of Vatnajökull. When the ice is cold and stable, from about October to April, guides find the safest caves and take small groups inside. The ice is so dense and free of air that it glows deep blue, which is where the name 'crystal ice cave' comes from.

You meet at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and ride about 30 minutes in a Super Jeep to the glacier. The walk into the cave is short, and you wear crampons and a helmet. Inside, your guide explains how the cave formed and gives you time for photos. The whole tour takes 2 to 3 hours.

Ice caves are natural and change every year, and sometimes every week, so the cave you visit depends on conditions on the day. Tours run in winter only, when roads in the south east can be icy and daylight is short, so plan your drive to Jökulsárlón with time to spare.
