About the Vatnajökull ice cave tour
This tour meets at the main car park by Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, so it's easy to combine with time at the lagoon itself before or after. From there, a super jeep takes you to the edge of Vatnajökull, Iceland's largest ice cap, for a walk to a natural ice cave formed inside the glacier.
The walk to the cave takes 15 to 25 minutes over uneven, icy ground, and you spend around 45 to 55 minutes inside exploring with your guide, who explains how the cave formed and points out its features. Micro spikes are provided when needed for grip, along with a helmet and headlamp.
It runs in the colder months, October to April, when conditions make the ice cave safe to enter; ice caves shift and change shape year to year, so the cave you visit depends on that season. It's rated easy to moderate: there's no major elevation gain, but the ground is uneven, so proper boots with ankle support matter.
