Hraunfossar, the 'lava falls', is made up of countless small streams that emerge directly from beneath the Hallmundarhraun lava field and trickle into the Hvítá river along about 900 metres of riverbank. The water filtering through the lava stays clear and a striking blue-white. Barnafoss, a smaller and more turbulent waterfall on the same river, is a few minutes' walk upstream.

Húsafell is a resort area in West Iceland, where the lowlands of Borgarfjörður give way to the highlands, close to the ice cap Langjökull and some of the country's largest lava caves. It has long been a summer retreat for Icelanders, with a church, a golf course, a campsite and forest walking trails, and it has grown into a year-round destination with its own geothermal baths.

About the Into the Glacier day tour

This is a full day trip out to Langjökull, Iceland's second-largest glacier at around 950 square kilometres, to walk through man-made tunnels cut into the ice. Unlike natural ice caves, which only open in winter when conditions are safe, these tunnels run all year, so it's a good option if you're visiting outside ice cave season.

The day starts with an early pick-up in Reykjavík and a drive inland, stopping at Hraunfossar, a wide run of small waterfalls pouring out of a lava field, and the village of Húsafell for a break. From there you switch to a specially modified vehicle built to travel on the glacier itself, before walking into the tunnel with your guide.

Inside the tunnel the ice glows pale blue in places, and the guide explains how the tunnels are built and how the glacier moves. It's a long day, around 11 hours door to door, with roughly an hour actually inside the tunnel, so expect a fair amount of driving either side.

It's a long day overall, around 10 hours door to door, with time built in for the stops.

The best tour

Our whole family had the best time on this tour. It was unreal to walk inside the glacier and see the world there. The guide was fantastic and told us so much about the formation of the glacier and its history. The ride to the glacier was also comfortable and it was an experience to drive in the huge jeep.

Unique Adventure Exploring Ice Tunnels

Into the Glacier was unlike anything I’d ever done before! Walking through man-made ice tunnels inside Langjokull glacier was surreal and so well done. The guide shared fascinating details about the glacier’s history and the effort it took to create the tunnels. The day continued with a tour around West Iceland, where we visited beautiful landscapes, waterfalls, and small towns. Our guide was excellent, sharing local stories and giving us a true sense of Icelandic culture and nature. This tour was the perfect mix of adventure and sightseeing, and I’d recommend it to anyone wanting a deeper look into Iceland’s glaciers and west coast wonders!
