About the snowmobile and ice cave tour

This tour fits well into a self-drive Golden Circle day. You meet your guide in the Geysir area and transfer to the foot of Langjökull in a 4x4 Super Truck built for glacier travel. At base camp you gear up and get a safety briefing before heading out onto the ice.

You ride a snowmobile for about an hour behind your guide, with a stop at a natural ice cave in the glacier. You spend about 15 minutes inside, looking at blue ice with dark streaks of volcanic ash. Natural ice caves change every winter, so what you see depends on the season. Then you ride back to base camp and the Super Truck takes you down again.

The tour runs from November to April, when the cave is safe to enter. It is cold and often windy on the glacier, and winter roads to Geysir can be icy, so give yourself extra time to get there. Bring a packed lunch, as food is not included. The driver of each snowmobile needs a valid car driving licence.

Included

  • Super Truck transfer to and from the glacier
  • Guided snowmobile ride of about 1 hour

  • Meet at the Geysir Centre parking (Haukadalur); you drive yourself there, so allow extra time on winter roads. Start times are 10:15 and 14:45
  • Runs November to April, when the ice cave is safe to visit
  • Food is not included
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start

Highlight of our Iceland trip.

We had a great time on this tour - highly recommend adding the ice cave tour to your snowmobile ride, it was the highlight of our trip and it was great to stop the snowmobile tour for a bit and explore the glacier and ice cave before heading back to gullfoss on the snowmobile. Really loved this experience and it was one of the highlights of our trip.
