About the Into the Glacier tour Húsafell

Langjökull is Iceland's second-largest glacier, and this tour drives you right onto it in a specially modified monster truck, a converted heavy vehicle built to handle deep snow and ice. From Húsafell the drive up takes a while before you reach the tunnel entrance.

Inside, the tunnel is cut into the glacier itself and lit along the way, showing layers of ice and volcanic ash built up over years, along with features such as crevasses and a small ice chapel. Ice spikes are fitted to your boots for grip, and safety gear is provided.

This is one of the few glacier experiences in Iceland that runs all year, since the tunnel is stable regardless of season, though from mid-October to the end of May tours depart from Húsafell only. It is rated easy since the walking inside is on a flat, prepared path, but it is cold inside the ice, so dress warmly.

Questions people ask

Is this a natural ice cave or man-made?

The tunnel is man-made, cut into Langjökull glacier, which is why it can be visited safely all year.

Do I need to be fit for this?

No, walking inside is on a flat, prepared path, so it suits all ages.

What is the monster truck like?

A heavily modified 8x8 vehicle built for glacier terrain. The ride up is part of the experience.

How cold is it inside?

Cold, since you are inside real glacier ice, so dress in warm layers even if it is mild outside.

Great family experience

Did this tour with my wife and 3 kids: ages 2, 5 and 7. The kids absolutely loved it (and us also of course) and we especially loved to see how much fun the kid had on the tour. Was a bit nervous for the jeep ride with the kids but they absolutely loved it. We even saw an arctic fox on the way and they were in awe. When we arrived at the glacier it was very windy and cold but we went straight to the tunnels where it felt warm and no wind at all. Walked though the tunnels and it was simply amazing! will definitely be going on this tour again next year when we bring my parents and siblings to Iceland.

Great experience!

Incredible experience with our family. We were traveling with two children 4 and 6 years old and were not able to do the natural ice caves, but we were very much happy that we decided to go on this tour as it was the best experience. The tour is very kid friendly and had people on all ages. We had the best time and would recommend this for anyone traveling to Iceland with their family!

Incredible

The ice tunnels were incredible! Walking through layers of blue ice was like being in another world. Our guide shared so much about the glacier’s history and made it a fun, educational experience. Highly recommend this unique tour!

Into the Glacier!

We joined the tour from Husafel, which is an easy drive from Reyjavik. The driving directions were specific from the tour company...use the coordinates and route they suggest. Prepare for a long tour end to end 3-4 hours. There are bathrooms in Husafel and at the basecamp on the glacier, so plan your potty breaks accordingly. The drive from basecamp to the cave on a retired 1980s missile launch vehicle was cool. Our guide was informative. The trip inside the glacier was well organized and safe. Do take water proof boots or borrow the shoe covers at basecamp. You'll need a water resistant jacket with hood or a poncho since water drips or pours from some areas inside the cave. There are also puddles inside the glacier that are deeper than they look...particularly in the "fairy lights" section...you'll know when you get there. Bring a hydroflask or other container to gather the glacier runoff inside the cave...some of the cleanest water you'll ever taste. Our family of 6 really enjoyed the entire experience! Would highly recomend.
