The Super Jeep covers rough ground that a normal car cannot manage, heading from the Jökulsárlón car park toward the edge of Vatnajökull. The drive takes about 30 minutes each way.

Meltwater channels have carved passages through the glacier ice, which shows a deep blue colour in the natural light. The ground is uneven and icy. The cave is a natural one, so which cave you visit depends on conditions that day.

After the cave, the guide leads a further walk out onto the glacier itself, in crampons. Difficulty is moderate, suited to reasonably fit walkers, and this is what makes the tour longer than a cave visit alone.

About the Vatnajökull ice cave tour

This tour visits a natural ice cave inside Vatnajökull, Europe's largest ice cap, in a small group capped at 8 guests rather than a full coach load. It starts at the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon car park, where a super jeep takes you roughly half an hour toward the glacier.

After a safety briefing and gear fitting, your guide leads you into a natural blue ice cave, then adds on a longer glacier walk across the surrounding ice. The terrain is uneven and can be icy, so it suits people who are reasonably fit and steady on their feet, with good ankle-supporting boots.

Because natural ice caves depend on the glacier's condition, this tour only runs from October to April, when the ice is stable enough to enter safely. Winter daylight is short in the southeast, so timings can shift, and the operator may reschedule or refund the trip if conditions turn unsafe.
