Time inside one or more of the natural ice caves in Vatnajökull. The caves form and change naturally each year, so the exact cave and route depend on conditions on the day. About the extreme blue ice cave tour

This tour goes further into Vatnajökull than a standard ice cave visit, combining a Super Jeep ride with a glacier hike to reach natural blue ice caves. It meets at the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon car park, so it pairs well with time at the lagoon itself before or after.

After a safety briefing you ride in a modified Super Jeep onto the glacier, then fit crampons, a helmet and a harness for the walk to the cave. Ice caves in Vatnajökull are natural and change from year to year, so your guide chooses the route and cave based on the day's conditions, and may visit a second cave if time and conditions allow. Expect to spend around 45 minutes inside the main cave.

This is graded moderate rather than easy: you need normal, reasonable fitness for glacier walking in crampons, and there are no toilets once you leave the lagoon car park. It runs only in winter, from October to April, when the ice caves are stable enough to enter safely, and is not recommended for pregnant travellers.

Weather on the glacier can change quickly, and winter daylight is short, so allow some flexibility around the exact start time and route on the day.

Questions people ask

Do we need ice cave or glacier experience?

No. Your guide provides all safety gear and instruction, but you should be in generally good physical condition for walking on ice in crampons.

Which ice cave will we visit?

Ice caves in Vatnajökull change every year, so your guide picks the safest cave for the day's conditions, and may add a second one if time allows.

How do we get to the meeting point?

Transport to Jökulsárlón is not included; you need your own way to reach the car park.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes, 7 years, and the tour is graded moderate rather than easy.

Worth it!

This tour was absolutely worth it! I am so happy that we decided to do this ice cave tour instead of the others. The tour guide was a local and it was only our family on the tour (even though we did not book the privet tour option). He told us that for this tour the groups are regularly very small and that is why it is often like a private tour. We traveled to two ice caves and in the second ice cave we were the only ones there. Stunning glacier and ice cave views and we got amazing pictures. Would be great to share them with you.
Thank you for planning our trip and recommending this tour, we really appreciate it.

The best experience

This was the most amazing experience of our trip. Did this tour with my wife and daughter and it was the highlight for all of us. Sindri our guide was exceptional, very friendly and born and raised in the area. Told us so many interesting stories from his upbringing and the nature all around.

Great overall experience!

One of the most unique experiences of my traveling days! Our guide Sindri was great, from the area and told us so many great stories from his life there.
The ice caves were breathtaking and we were the only one in the ice cave when we visited. Saw some other group tours with packed jeeps but we were only 6 people on our tour.
