Jökulsárlón is a lagoon filled with icebergs that calve from Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, and drift slowly out towards the sea. It formed in the 1930s as the glacier retreated, and has grown from about 8 km² in the 1970s to roughly 25 km² today. At over 280 metres deep it is the deepest lake in Iceland. It is free to view from the shore.

Diamond Beach is a black sand beach directly opposite Jökulsárlón. Chunks of ice break off Breiðamerkurjökull, drift across the lagoon and out to sea under the Ring Road bridge, and the current pushes many of them back onto the sand, where they melt slowly and catch the light like scattered diamonds. It is a short walk under the bridge from the lagoon, and entry is free.

About the private tour Djúpivogur Jökulsárlón

This private tour runs from Djúpivogur, a small port on Iceland's east coast, out to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, one of the country's best-known sights. Because it is private, your driver-guide sets the pace and can adjust stops depending on your interests and the weather.

Along the way you visit a quieter glacier away from the main crowds, then reach Jökulsárlón itself, where icebergs calve from Breiðamerkurjökull and drift out toward the sea. Just across the road, Diamond Beach is where chunks of that ice wash up on black volcanic sand. If you want to get onto the water, an amphibian boat or zodiac ride can usually be added for an extra cost.

The day is easy and mostly done from the vehicle and short walks, so it suits most ages and fitness levels, though it is not recommended for anyone with significant knee, leg or hip problems given the amount of time in the vehicle and on uneven shoreline. Good weather matters for the full experience, and the tour can be rescheduled if conditions are poor.
