A day hike from Þórsmörk up part of the Fimmvörðuháls trail, over black sand plains and lava ridges in country shaped by the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, to the craters Magni and Móði, named after the sons of Thor. The hike starts and ends in Þórsmörk, so you sleep in the same hut again. There are steep sections and loose gravel, so good boots and reasonable fitness are needed.

About the 7 day Laugavegur trek

This 7 day Laugavegur trek follows Iceland's best-known hiking trail and then adds a day on the South Coast. You walk the 55 km trail from the coloured mountains of Landmannalaugar to the birch woods of Þórsmörk over the first four days, sleeping in mountain huts along the way.

From Þórsmörk you spend a day hiking up to Magni and Móði, the two craters formed in the 2010 eruption on the Fimmvörðuháls trail, and come back to the same hut. On day six you have a shorter walk in the valley before the highland bus takes you to a countryside hotel in Hella.

The last day is by road. You stop at the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls and the black sand beach at Reynisfjara, then join a guided hike on Sólheimajökull glacier, with the equipment provided, before the drive back to Reykjavík.

This is a real hike, not a sightseeing trip. Walking days last from about 3 to 9 hours and the longest is around 24 km, with river crossings and changeable weather. It is rated moderate and the minimum age is 15. Your main luggage is moved between the huts, so you carry only a day pack, and the group is never larger than 16.

Questions people ask

How fit do we need to be?

You should be comfortable walking for several hours a day, six days in a row. The longest day is about 24 km and takes 8–9 hours. The tour is rated moderate.

Do we carry our own luggage?

No. You carry a day pack, and your main luggage is moved between the huts for you. You can bring one bag of up to 20 kg per person.

What are the huts like?

The huts have shared, dormitory-style bunk beds, and you sleep in your own sleeping bag. Showers cost extra and are paid at the warden's hut. There are no power outlets for guests and no Wi-Fi, so a power bank is useful.

Which meals are included?

All meals from lunch on day 1 to lunch on day 6, plus breakfast at the hotel on day 7. Dinner on day 6 and lunch and dinner on day 7 are your own. In the huts, the guides and the group prepare the meals together.
