1Pick-up in ReykjavíkEarly pick-up from central Reykjavík, with additional stops en route.
2Day 1: Reykjavík to LandmannalaugarDrive into the highlands, then a short loop hike through the lava field and Grænagil gorge.
You leave Reykjavík early and drive about 3 to 4 hours to Landmannalaugar, with views of the south coast and the volcano Hekla on the way. The Laugavegur trail starts here, but the first day is a warm-up loop through the Laugahraun lava field, the Grænagil gorge and the slopes of Bláhnjúkur. In the evening there is dinner at the hut and a soak in the natural hot spring, the only one on the trail.
Distance · about 8 kmWalking time · 4–5 hoursAscent · about 470 mNight · Landmannalaugar hut
3Day 2: Landmannalaugar to ÁlftavatnThe longest day, over the high ground at Hrafntinnusker and down to the lake at Álftavatn.
The trail leaves through the Laugahraun lava field and passes the coloured slopes of Brennisteinsalda and the Stórihver hot spring, then climbs through narrow gorges and across yellow ridges in the Reykjafjöll mountains. After lunch in the black obsidian desert at Hrafntinnusker you drop through the steaming gullies of Jökultungur, where the ground is stained yellow and red by geothermal heat. On a clear day you can see the Mýrdalsjökull, Eyjafjallajökull and Tindfjallajökull glaciers. The day ends with a river to wade before the hut at Álftavatn.
Distance · about 24 kmWalking time · 8–9 hoursAscent · about 900 mNight · Álftavatn hut
4Day 3: Álftavatn to EmstrurAcross the black sand desert of Mælifellssandur to the hut at Botnar in Emstrur.
The day starts with a stream crossing and then crosses the black sand desert of Mælifellssandur, passing the volcanoes Stórasúla and Hattafell with their moss-covered slopes. On clear days you can see Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. Near the end you reach the Markarfljótsgljúfur canyon, about 200 m deep, and then Botnar, a green patch in the middle of the desert where the hut stands.
Distance · about 15 kmWalking time · 6–7 hoursDescent · about 40 mNight · Emstrur hut
5Day 4: Emstrur to ÞórsmörkThe last stretch of the trail, down through the Almenningar area into the birch woods of Þórsmörk.
The final section of the Laugavegur trail leads through the Almenningar gorge, below the pointed shape of Mount Einhyrningur, with glacier views over Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. As you approach Þórsmörk, sparse trees appear and slowly give way to dense birch forest. You arrive in the valley, surrounded by mountains and glaciers, having finished the Laugavegur trail.
Distance · about 15 kmWalking time · 6–7 hoursDescent · about 300 mNight · Langidalur hut, Þórsmörk
6Day 5: Magni and Móði craters, Fimmvörðuháls trailA hike from Þórsmörk up the Fimmvörðuháls trail to the Magni and Móði craters, and back to the valley.
The route follows part of the Fimmvörðuháls trail, starting and ending in the Þórsmörk valley. You walk through black sand plains and over lava ridges, in country shaped by the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull. Near the craters the ground is fresh lava and steaming vents. Magni and Móði, named after the sons of Thor, were formed in that eruption, and on a clear day there are views over Mýrdalsjökull and the highlands. The trail has some steep sections and loose gravel, so good boots and reasonable fitness are needed.
Distance · about 16 kmWalking time · 7–8 hoursNight · Langidalur hut, Þórsmörk
7Day 6: Þórsmörk to ReykjavíkA morning in Þórsmörk, then the highland bus back to Reykjavík.
The last morning is spent in Þórsmörk. If the weather allows, you can climb the steep path up Útigönguhöfði, or take an easier walk to Húsadalur, or rest around the Langidalur hut. On the way back to the city the bus passes the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and the group is back in Reykjavík in the early evening, at around 6:30 pm.
Distance · about 6 kmWalking time · about 3 hoursAscent · about 275 m
This is the classic Icelandic trek, combining the Laugavegur trail with a day on the Fimmvörðuháls trail into one 6 day route. You drive into the highlands on day one, walk the Laugavegur trail from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk over days two to four, then spend day five on the Fimmvörðuháls trail, hiking out to the Magni and Móði craters and back to the valley.
Days vary in length. Day two, from Landmannalaugar to Álftavatn, is the longest at about 24 km, with about 900 m of ascent and a river to wade at the end. Day one is a shorter warm-up of about 8 km, and the last day is a walk of about 6 km in and around Þórsmörk before the bus back to Reykjavík.
You sleep in mountain huts each night, in Landmannalaugar, at Álftavatn, in Emstrur and then two nights in Langidalur in Þórsmörk. Meals are included from lunch on day one to lunch on day six, and the guide travels with the group throughout.
This is a real hike, not a sightseeing trip: expect river crossings, changeable weather and full days on your feet, which is why it is rated moderate and has a minimum age of 15. It runs in summer only, when the huts are open and the route is clear of snow. The huts have shared bunk rooms rather than private rooms, and groups are small, up to 16 people per guide.

The most magnificent 6 days!
This hiking tour was simply magical, the best one I have ever been on. We had great weather and the views were out of this world! We did this tour in August 2025 and it was just perfect! Huts were great, hiking was not too difficult, and the atmosphere and nature all around you were out of this world! If you like nature and hiking, dont even think about it, just go on the tour!

Awesome trek!
Our trek guide and leader was consistently professional, cheerful, and supportive throughout the journey. The trek was challenging, but enjoyable. I am from Australia and trekked the Laugavegur and Fimmvorouhais 6 day hike with an awesome group of people. The trek is magnificent and Iceland is an amazing country. Hope you will get the same guide as we did!

Unforgettable trek
An unforgettable trek along the Laugavegur Trail with our incredible guide, Jonatan. He went above and beyond to turn our group into a close-knit trail family, sharing hidden gems along the way that most never get to see. This was a challenging adventure, but such an amazing and rewarding experience!
