You drive into the highlands, with views of the south coast and Hekla on the way, and arrive at Landmannalaugar, where the Laugavegur trail begins. The first day is a shorter warm-up of about 8 kilometres among the coloured rhyolite mountains, to help you find your pace. The night is in the mountain hut at Landmannalaugar.

The longest day of the trek. The trail leaves through the Laugahraun lava field, passes the coloured slopes of Brennisteinsalda and climbs through narrow gorges and across yellow ridges, before crossing the black obsidian desert at Hrafntinnusker. It then drops through steaming gullies, where the ground is stained yellow and red by geothermal heat. The day ends with a river to wade before the hut at Álftavatn.

A mostly level day. It starts with a stream crossing, then crosses the black sand desert of Mælifellssandur, passing volcanoes with moss-covered slopes. Near the end you reach the Markarfljótsgljúfur canyon, about 200 metres deep, and then Botnar, a green patch in the middle of the desert. The night is in the mountain hut at Emstrur.

Distance · about 15 kmWalking time · 6–7 hours
5The valley of ÞórsmörkDay 4: Emstrur to ÞórsmörkThe trail drops down from the highlands into the valley of Þórsmörk.

The last stage of the Laugavegur trail leads through the Almenningar gorge below the pointed shape of Mount Einhyrningur, with glacier views over Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. As you approach Þórsmörk, sparse trees appear and slowly give way to dense birch forest. You arrive in the valley, surrounded by mountains and glaciers, and stay in the Langidalur hut for the next two nights.

A day hike from Þórsmörk up part of the Fimmvörðuháls trail, through black sand plains and over lava ridges in country shaped by the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull. Magni and Móði, named after the sons of Thor, were formed in that eruption, and near them the ground is fresh lava and steaming vents. There are some steep sections and loose gravel, so good boots and reasonable fitness are needed. You return to the same hut in Langidalur.

Distance · about 16 kmWalking time · 7–8 hours
7The green valley of Þórsmörk and its hutDay 6: Þórsmörk to HellaA last short walk in Þórsmörk, then the highland bus takes you to a hotel in Hella.

A last short walk in Þórsmörk before the highland bus takes you out of the valley to a countryside hotel in Hella. If the weather allows, you can take the steep hike up Mount Útigönguhöfði. An easier choice is a stroll to Húsadalur, or a rest around the Langidalur hut.

Your guide gives you the equipment and a safety briefing before you step onto the ice.

About the 8 day Laugavegur trek

This tour joins Iceland's best-known trek with the classic sights of the south in one 8 day trip. You walk the Laugavegur trail from the coloured mountains of Landmannalaugar to the green valley of Þórsmörk, then spend two days seeing the South Coast and the Golden Circle by bus.

The trekking days vary in length. The second day, from Landmannalaugar to Álftavatn, is the longest at about 24 km, while the first and sixth days are short. On day five you hike from Þórsmörk up part of the Fimmvörðuháls trail to the Magni and Móði craters and back to the same hut.

You sleep in mountain huts for the first five nights, in shared rooms with bunk beds or mattresses, and in a hotel for the last two. Your main bag is moved between the huts by a support vehicle, so you carry only a day pack. Meals are included from lunch on day one to lunch on day six, and breakfast on days seven and eight.

This is a real hike, with river crossings, steep sections, loose gravel and weather that changes fast. It is rated moderate and the minimum age is 15. The group is small, with up to 16 people and an English-speaking guide.

Questions people ask

How fit do we need to be?

You should be comfortable walking for several hours a day, six days in a row, including one long day of about 24 km that takes 8 to 9 hours. The trail has some steep sections and loose gravel.

Do we carry our own luggage?

No. A support vehicle moves your main bag between the huts. You can send one bag of up to 20 kg, and a waterproof duffel bag is best because luggage can get wet on the way. You carry a day pack with your lunch, water, rain gear and river shoes.

What are the huts like?

The huts have shared rooms with bunk beds or mattresses, so you need your own sleeping bag. Every hut has showers, which you pay for on site. There is no Wi-Fi in the huts. The whole group helps the guides prepare the meals.

Do we cross rivers on the trek?

Yes. You wade across rivers on the trail, for example just before the hut at Álftavatn. Bring a pair of old trainers or similar shoes for the crossings.
