8 day Iceland tours and itineraries

Eight days is enough to drive the whole Ring Road with a guide and still stop properly at the places you came for. Four of the five tours on this page do that in a small-group minibus of up to 18 guests, with seven nights and breakfast included. Three of them also add the Snæfellsnes peninsula, which the 6-day loops leave out. The fifth is a hiking trip on the Laugavegur trail.

We are a local travel agency in Iceland. Our tours are run in partnership with local guides here in Iceland, and some we operate ourselves. We answer your questions before and during your trip.

The summer tour follows the same loop and adds Dyrhólaey, the Katla ice cave, Stuðlagil canyon and Dettifoss.

Winter or summer

Winter (October to April). Days are short, with only four to five hours of daylight in December. Roads can be icy and storms can close them, so your guide may change the order of stops. In return you get ice caves, which need freezing weather, and a chance of the northern lights from countryside hotels on clear nights.

Summer (May to September). Long daylight means more stops each day. Stuðlagil canyon and Dettifoss are on the summer route, and the highland road to Landmannalaugar is open from mid-June to September.

Questions people ask

Is 8 days enough to drive around Iceland?

Yes. The Ring Road tours on this page cover the full loop in eight days. Expect about 300 km and 4 to 5 hours on the road on an average day, broken up by many stops. The Westfjords are not part of these tours.

Can you drive the Ring Road in winter?

Yes, with a guide. Three of these tours run in winter, and a local guide does the driving. The order of stops can change with the weather, and a stop can be replaced if a road is closed.

Will I see the northern lights?

They are possible from September to April on clear, dark nights, and never guaranteed. On the 8 Day Northern Lights Tour, you get a voucher to try again for free if you see none on the two included aurora tours.

What is included in the price?

On the four minibus tours: the guide, transport, seven nights in rooms with a private bathroom, breakfast, and the activities in the table above. Lunch, dinner, flights and travel insurance are not included. Rooms are shared by two, so solo travellers pay a single room supplement.

Where do the tours start?

Pick-up is in Reykjavík from 8:00 in the morning, not at Keflavík airport, so plan to arrive the day before. The Northern Lights tour is the exception: day 1 and day 8 are free days in Reykjavík, so you can land on day 1 and fly home on day 8.

How much luggage can I bring?

One suitcase per person. The winter tour allows a suitcase of up to 24 inches. The Tour Around Iceland and the Northern Lights tour allow one bag of up to 20 kg plus a small backpack. Extra bags can be stored in Reykjavík for a fee.

Is there a minimum age?

The minibus tours are for ages 8 and up, and the glacier hike needs a shoe size of EU 34 or larger. The Laugavegur trek is for ages 15 and up.

What is the difference between the 8-day tours?

The winter tour and the summer tour drive the same loop in different seasons, and both include a glacier hike, an ice cave and whale watching. The Northern Lights tour starts and ends with a free day in Reykjavík and adds two aurora tours, but leaves out Snæfellsnes. The Tour Around Iceland runs all year and ends with a highland day or a snowmobile ride. The table above shows them side by side.

What are the rooms like?

On the minibus tours you stay in hotels or guesthouses, in rooms with a private bathroom, with breakfast included. Most of our multi-day tours use 3-star hotels unless the tour page says otherwise. Rooms are shared by two people, and you can usually ask for a double bed or twin beds. If you travel alone, you pay a single room supplement for your own room.

Do I have to join every activity?

No. You can sit out an activity, such as the glacier hike or the whale watching, and wait for the group. There is usually nothing else planned for that time.

Can I do this as a private tour?

Yes. Ask us, and a local replies within 24 hours with a private trip on the same route.
