4 day Iceland tours and itineraries

Four days is enough for the Golden Circle, the South Coast as far as Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and one more region. In winter that region is the Snæfellsnes peninsula. In summer you choose between Snæfellsnes and a day in Landmannalaugar in the highlands.

The three minibus tours on this page include a guide, three nights with breakfast and at least one glacier or ice cave visit. The two Laugavegur treks are guided hikes of 55 km with nights in mountain huts or tents. Four days is too short for the Ring Road. For that, see the 6-day and 8-day tours.

A typical 4-day route

This is the route of the 4 Day Iceland Winter Tour.

  1. Golden Circle. Þingvellir, Brúarfoss, Geysir and Gullfoss. Night in a countryside hotel.
  2. South Coast and Jökulsárlón. Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, the black sand beach at Reynisfjara, the glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach. Night in Southeast Iceland.
  3. Glacier hike or ice cave. A guided walk with crampons on an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, or a natural blue ice cave. All gear is provided. Night on the South Coast.
  4. Snæfellsnes peninsula. Kirkjufell mountain, the black church at Búðir and the coastal cliffs, then back to Reykjavík.

Winter or summer

Winter (October to April). Daylight is short and roads can be icy, so the guide may change the order of stops. The three countryside nights are away from city lights, which gives you a real chance of the northern lights on a clear night.

Summer (May to September). The summer package adds a boat ride among the icebergs on Jökulsárlón and the Katla ice cave. The Landmannalaugar tour swaps Snæfellsnes for a day in the highlands, which you can only reach while the highland road is open.

Questions people ask

Is 4 days enough for Iceland?

It is enough for the Golden Circle, the South Coast to Jökulsárlón and one more region, with three nights outside Reykjavík. It is not enough for the Ring Road, which needs at least six days.

Do we do a glacier hike or an ice cave?

On the winter tour it is one of the two, decided by the season and conditions on the day. Both come with all the gear you need. The summer package includes both a glacier hike and the Katla ice cave.

What is the difference between the 3, 4 and 5 day winter tours?

The 3 day tour covers the Golden Circle, the South Coast, a glacier hike or ice cave and Jökulsárlón, with two hotel nights. The 4 day tour adds the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The 5 day tour adds Borgarfjörður with Hraunfossar and a lava cave, and includes both a glacier hike and an ice cave.

Will I see the northern lights?

On the winter tour you have a real chance on clear nights, because the hotels are in the countryside. No one can guarantee them.

Where do the tours start?

The winter tour picks up in central Reykjavík between 8:00 and 8:45 in the morning, and the summer package between 8:00 and 8:30. Neither picks up at Keflavík airport, so plan to arrive the day before.

Is there a minimum age?

The winter tour and the summer package are for ages 8 and up, and the glacier hike needs a shoe size of EU 34 or larger. The Landmannalaugar tour is for ages 10 and up, and the Laugavegur treks for ages 15 and up.

What should I bring?

A warm base layer, a waterproof jacket and trousers, a hat, gloves and sturdy hiking boots. You can rent boots and waterproofs as an extra when you book.

What is included in the price?

On the three minibus tours: the guide, transport, three nights with breakfast, and the activities in the table above. Lunch and dinner are not included.

What are the rooms like?

On the winter tour and the summer package you stay in rooms with a private bathroom, shared by two people, with breakfast included. Most of our multi-day tours use 3-star hotels unless the tour page says otherwise, and you can usually ask for a double bed or twin beds. If you travel alone, you pay a single room supplement. On the Laugavegur treks you sleep in shared mountain huts or in tents.

Do I have to join every activity?

No. You can sit out an activity, such as the glacier hike or the ice cave, and wait for the group. There is usually nothing else planned for that time.

Can I do this as a private tour?

Yes. Ask us, and a local replies within 24 hours with a private trip on the same route.
