About the 8 day Iceland Northern Lights tour

This 8 day Iceland Northern Lights tour fits neatly into an 8-day trip. Day 1 and day 8 are free days in Reykjavík, so you can land on the first day and fly home on the last. In between, you spend six days circling the country on the Ring Road in a small-group minibus.

The aurora is the thread through the trip. You have a Northern Lights boat tour from Reykjavík's Old Harbour on the first evening and a minibus aurora tour on day 7, and your guide looks for the lights on clear nights in the countryside, where there is little light pollution. The Northern Lights can never be guaranteed, but if you don't see them on the included Reykjavík tours you can join again for free.

The daytime route covers the Golden Circle, the South Coast, Jökulsárlón, the East Fjords, Lake Mývatn and North Iceland, with a glacier hike or an ice cave visit and a whale watching trip included. Expect about 300 km and 4–5 hours in the minibus on an average day, with plenty of stops.

This runs in autumn and winter, so daylight is short, especially in December and January, and roads can be icy. Bring warm, waterproof layers and good boots. Your guide adjusts the plan around the weather, and sometimes the order of stops changes.

Questions people ask

Are we guaranteed to see the Northern Lights?

No, nobody can promise the aurora. You get several chances over the week, and if you don't see them on the included Reykjavík tours you can rejoin for free.

Can I book my flights to arrive on day 1?

Yes. Day 1 is a free day in Reykjavík with the aurora boat tour in the evening, and day 8 is free until you leave, so the tour fits an 8-day trip.

Is it a glacier hike or an ice cave?

It depends on the month: a glacier hike in September and a natural ice cave in Vatnajökull from October to April, when the caves are safe.

Are meals included?

Breakfast every day. Lunch and dinner are not included, but your guide stops at restaurants along the way.

Is winter driving a problem?

Your guide drives and knows the roads. Some days the plan can change because of weather or road closures.

Northern Lights and glaciers

This was an experience of a lifetime. We saw so many of Iceland’s iconic sites: from the Golden Circle to the South Coast glaciers, black sand beaches, and inside ice caves. Nights under the Northern Lights were just icing on the cake. What made this tour stand out was the guide’s attention to safety, detail, and getting us to the best viewing spots, even when weather was tricky. Hotels were cozy, the food good, and the group dynamic fun. If you're looking for a deep-dive Iceland winter tour, this is it.

Excellent 8 days

Eight days of wow. Every stop was worth it. Guides were superb. Northern Lights appeared more than once. Highly recommend.

Perfect balance

I was worried 8 days might be too intense, but the itinerary was so well paced that every high-energy activity was followed by comfortable downtime. Even with the short daylight hours - it was so well planned that it did not matter. Hiking glaciers one day, exploring the ice caves the next and seeing all the beautiful mountains and waterfalls. The nights hunting the Northern Lights were thoughtfully planned. The guide’s knowledge of local weather, culture, and lore added depth. Truly a tour that gives you the real Iceland without burning you out.

Dream under the auroras

As someone who has always wanted to see the Northern Lights, this tour made my dream come true. On nights when the sky was cloudy, the guide adjusted our schedule and took us to clearer spots. The landscapes by day—ice caves, volcano fields, waterfalls—were just as stunning. Small group size, warm accommodations, and the guide’s enthusiasm made all the difference. I’ll be telling stories about this trip for years.

Northern Lights in evenings and majestic days

This tour was the perfect balance between busy breathtaking days out exploring glaciers, ice caves, frozen lagoons, and calm cozy evenings in quaint guesthouses with the northern lights outside your window. I really appreciated that Iceland Travel Guide’s team recommended this tour to me. It covered exactly the places I wanted to see. Nights under the auroras were the icing on the cake. A winter trip done right
