About the family horseback riding tour

This is a gentle introduction to riding an Icelandic horse, based at a family-run farm in Hveragerði, about 45 minutes from Reykjavík. The ride follows the Reykjadalur valley, an area known for hot springs and steaming ground, with views towards Ingólfsfjall mountain.

The pace suits beginners and families: you walk for most of the ride, with more experienced riders sometimes given the chance to try the horse's tölt gait. Guides give a short introduction to handling the horse before you set off, so no previous riding experience is needed.

Because it runs on a farm rather than picking up from Reykjavík, you will need your own transport to reach the stables, about 45 minutes' drive from the capital. The tour runs all year, though winter days are shorter and the ground can be frosty in places.
