Gígjökull flows down from the Eyjafjallajökull crater. Its lagoon was filled with meltwater floods and ash during the 2010 eruption, and you walk out towards the ice to see the changed landscape. The walk is short, on gravel and uneven ground.

About the Þórsmörk super jeep tour

Þórsmörk is a green valley hidden between three glaciers: Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. It has birch woods, deep gorges and braided glacial rivers, and there is no bridge over most of them. That is why you need a super jeep, a high 4x4 on large tyres, to get in.

You meet your guide at Brú Base Camp on road 249, about 7 km in from the Seljalandsfoss turn-off. From there the drive runs over black sand plains and through several river crossings. You stop at Gígjökull, a glacier tongue whose lagoon filled with meltwater and debris during the 2010 eruption, and later take a short hike in the valley.

The tour runs all year. In summer the valley is green and the rivers are higher in the afternoon; in winter it is quieter, with snow and short daylight. Walks are optional and easy, but the ground is uneven, so wear proper shoes. Rain and wind can come in quickly, so bring waterproof layers whatever the forecast.

Highlight of our trip

We did this tour in March and wow it was definitely the highlight of our trip. We drove on large Super Jeeps so we were able to go over the rivers and the snowcovered highlands in Porsmork were simply out of this world. Mountains and trees everywhere we looked all covered in snow like winter wonderland. If you are traveling in March, defnitely do this tour.

Great day but a bit long

The super jeep tour to Thorsmork was awesome overall. The views were out of this world and the river crossings were a real adventure. Our guide was friendly and knew a lot about the area. Only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that the day felt a bit too long for us, especially the drive back. Still, I’m glad we did it and would recommend it.

Worth it!

I hesitated because of the price but it was worth it. You see places you just cant get to in a normal car. Jeep was comfortable enough and guide was funny and knew a lot. Scenery was unreal, glaciers on one side, green valley on the other.

Adventure off the beaten path

I have done many tours in Iceland before but this one felt the most adventurous. Thorsmork is remote and wild, and the super jeep is the only way to reach it. The guide was calm and skilled driving through the rivers. It felt like a real expedition.

Wild and beautiful

Thorsmork is just stunning. The drive there is half the fun, bouncing through rivers and rough tracks. Not the most comfortable ride if you expect a smooth road, but thats the whole point. Loved the canyon walk, views were insane.

Highlight of our trip

This was the highlight of our week in Iceland. The jeep is huge and goes places I never thought possible. We stopped for short hikes with amazing views. Weather went from sunny to rainy to sunny again but that kinda made it even more fun.
