The route into Þórsmörk crosses glacial rivers that change course and depth through the season, which is why only specially equipped vehicles make the trip. Much of the day is spent on this track, so the ride is bumpy and slow in places by design.

About the Þórsmörk super jeep tour

This is the easier way to see Þórsmörk: you stay in the super jeep for most of the day, with the driving itself part of the experience. The tracks in cross several glacial rivers and rough ground that ordinary cars cannot manage, so the ride is bumpy and slow in places by design.

Depending on conditions, the day can include short stops at spots such as a narrow canyon, a viewpoint over the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption area, or a short walk up to a summit view. None of the walking is long or demanding, and your guide can adjust the plan if someone in the group would rather stay near the jeep.

Unlike the hiking version of this tour, the super jeep tour runs all year, though the exact route and stops in winter depend heavily on snow and river conditions. Whatever the season, dress warmly, since you'll be out of the vehicle at several points.

Questions people ask

How is this different from the Þórsmörk hiking tour?

This tour spends most of the day in the super jeep with short walks at stops, while the hiking tour includes a 3–4 hour hike. Choose this one if you want the scenery without the long walk.

Does it run in winter?

Yes, all year, though the exact route and stops depend on snow and river conditions on the day.

Is it bumpy?

Yes. The tracks are rough by nature, with several river crossings, so it isn't the smoothest ride, but that's part of the appeal.

Is lunch included?

No, but a lunchbox from the base camp restaurant can usually be added when booking.

Can young children join?

Yes, there's a lower minimum age than the hiking tour since the walking is short and optional.
