The F-roads into Þórsmörk cross glacial rivers that only capable 4x4 vehicles can manage, so the drive is part of the experience. Allow roughly 1 to 1.5 hours each way. Þórsmörk means Thor's Forest, a sheltered valley between Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull.

The walk lasts about 3 to 4 hours, usually 6 to 12 km, on a route picked for the day's weather and the group. It might follow river canyons, birch woodland or a ridge with wider views of the glaciers. The trails are uneven with some climbing, so hiking boots make a real difference.

About the Þórsmörk hike

Þórsmörk sits between three glaciers, reached by a rough highland track with river crossings that ordinary cars cannot cross safely. This tour starts at the base camp in Hvolsvöllur and drives you in by super jeep, so you get to the trailhead without needing your own 4x4.

Once there, your guide leads a hike of around 3 to 4 hours. The exact route depends on conditions and the group, but options include a loop through birch forest and old sheep paths, a canyon walk along riverbeds, or a longer ridge route with more climbing. Expect uneven ground, some steep sections and elevation gain of up to a few hundred metres, so a reasonable level of fitness helps.

This only runs in summer, roughly May to October, when the highland road into Þórsmörk is open. Weather changes quickly even in summer, so bring layers and be ready for the plan to shift if conditions demand it.

Questions people ask

Do I need to get myself to Þórsmörk?

No. The tour starts at the base camp in Hvolsvöllur and the super jeep handles the river crossings for you.

How fit do I need to be?

You should be a comfortable, regular walker. The hike covers uneven ground and some sections climb steadily, though the exact route is chosen to suit the group on the day.

Is lunch included?

No, but a lunchbox from the base camp restaurant can usually be added when booking.

What if the weather is bad?

The route is adjusted to conditions, and in genuinely unsafe weather the operator will change or cancel the plan.

Can children join?

The minimum age is 13, because of the terrain and the length of the hike.

Spectacular Day!

We had the most spectacular time on this hiking tour to Torsmork. It was most definitely the best hike we have ever been on. The weather was magnificent (June 2025) and the views were out of this world. Iceland is beautiful, but when driving through the rivers on the way to Thorsmork, it is like a new Avatar world opens up, everything was so green and simply stunning. The hike was medium challenging, but absolutely worth it. The jeep ride was comfortable and it was fun to drive over the rivers in such a huge car. Our guide was the best, very friendly, helped with everything and we had a great time with him.
