Gígjökull flows down from Eyjafjallajökull and once formed a lagoon at its foot. The 2010 eruption's floods reshaped the area, and the glacier has retreated further since. The walk from the parking area is short and easy.

Stakkholtsgjá is a narrow gorge about 2 kilometres long, on the way into Þórsmörk beside the F249 track. Its walls rise up to about 100 metres, straight palagonite cliffs covered in green moss, with caves, narrow side ravines and ledges where plants grow. The walk along the canyon floor is easy and fairly flat, though uneven, with stream crossings on stones, and ends at a waterfall. It is a summer-only route, roughly June to September.

Þórsmörk, 'Thor's Forest', is a sheltered valley in the South Iceland highlands, surrounded by the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. It lies lower than the land around it, so birch woodland, moss and wildflowers grow among black sand, lava and ice. The only way in is by modified 4x4 on the F249 mountain road, which crosses the Krossá river, and the road is generally open from June to September. The Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails both end here. Getting there means crossing several glacial rivers, which your guide judges on the day.

Nauthúsagil ravineNauthúsagil ravineNauthúsagil ravine

Nauthúsagil is a narrow ravine below the glacier-capped volcano Eyjafjallajökull, beside the farm Stóra-Mörk on the road towards Þórsmörk. A stream runs through a gap in the rock, and rowan trees grow out of the cliffs on both sides, some almost horizontally, closing over the path in places like a roof of leaves. The walk in is about 1.6 kilometres there and back, with stream crossings on stepping stones, wet rock and one fixed chain, ending at the waterfall Nauthúsafoss. A quieter stop in Þórsmörk, reached by a short scramble along a stream into a green, narrow gorge.

About the Þórsmörk super jeep tour

Þórsmörk sits between three glaciers, and the unbridged glacial rivers on the way in mean the only way there is on foot, by bus with special river-crossing tyres, or by Super Jeep. This tour takes the Super Jeep route, so your guide reads the river each time and picks a safe line across.

The day runs south along the Ring Road with a coffee stop in Hvolsvöllur, then turns onto the F-roads towards Gígjökull, the glacier tongue that used to reach almost to the road before Eyjafjallajökull's 2010 eruption changed the landscape. From there you head into Stakkholtsgjá, a narrow gorge you can walk into on foot, and on into Þórsmörk itself, a green, sheltered valley that looks different from the black sand and lava around it.

None of the walking is difficult, so the tour suits most fitness levels, but it runs only in summer when the rivers are passable and the F-roads are open, roughly May to September. Lunch is not included, so bring packed food, and dress for a day that mixes vehicle time with short walks in changeable Highland weather.

Questions people ask

Why do I need a Super Jeep for this?

Þórsmörk is cut off by unbridged glacial rivers. A normal car can't cross them; a modified Super Jeep can, with your guide choosing a safe crossing point.

Is it safe to cross the rivers?

Guides cross rivers they know well and check conditions on the day. If a crossing looks unsafe, the route is adjusted.

How much walking is involved?

Short, easy walks at each stop. The main physical part of the day is the vehicle ride itself.

When does this tour run?

In summer only, roughly May to September, when the highland roads and river crossings are accessible.

Is lunch included?

No. Bring a packed lunch and snacks; there is a coffee stop in Hvolsvöllur.

Can not wait to go back to Porsmork

Words can not describe Porsmork - it is simply stunning and way more beautiful than in photos even though they look unreal! You just have to go there. We started this tour in Reykjavik and drove to Porsmork in a great vehicle and the guide was the best. We did a hike in Porsmork and the views were stunning! Seeing the glaciers, mountains and rivers was just amazing and I can not wait to go back.

One of the best days of my traveling life! Thorsmork is a very unique place that has a large place in my heart after this trip. Breathtaking scenery.
The ride to Thorsmork was a bit bumpy but the second half of it was extremely beautiful. When we arrived in Torsmork we were greeted by stunning views all around. This was the biggest surprise of my trip to Iceland.
The guide was nice, we enjoyed him a lot.
A thing that you might want to know - there is no bathroom break when you start driving into the highlands and the ride can take more than 1 hour, so I recommend to use the bathroom on the stop before we enter the highlands.
