The Super Jeep is needed here: the road is rough gravel with several river crossings that a normal car cannot manage. The ride is bumpy, so keep loose items secured. The tracks are only open in summer.

Hekla is a long ridge-shaped volcano, 1,491 metres high, that has erupted around 20 times since Iceland was settled. The first eruption on record, in 1104, was also the largest, and after it medieval writers began to describe Hekla as a gateway to Hell, an idea that spread across Europe. It last erupted in 2000. Summit hiking is discouraged, because the warning before an eruption can be as short as 30 minutes.

Landmannalaugar, in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, is known for its rhyolite mountains, which weather into shades of pink, green, yellow and orange rather than the black basalt found across most of Iceland. Black lava fields, steaming ground and a natural hot spring, usually 36 to 40°C, complete the landscape. The roads in are F-roads with river crossings, generally open from late June to early September, and this is where the Laugavegur trail begins.

About the Landmannalaugar super jeep tour from Hella

Landmannalaugar is one of the highlights of the Icelandic highlands: a landscape of rhyolite mountains in shades of red, yellow and green, with a natural hot spring at the edge of the lava field. The roads in are unpaved highland tracks with river crossings, so a super jeep with a local driver is the practical way to get there.

From Hella the route runs through the highlands past Ljótipollur, a turquoise crater lake with deep red slopes, and up towards the base of Hekla volcano. At Landmannalaugar you have time to walk some of the trails, usually around 8 km in total at a gentle pace, before finishing with a soak in the geothermal pool where the hot spring meets a cold mountain stream.

This tour runs all year, but the highland roads are only open in summer; in winter the route and stops change with conditions, so ask when you book what the day will look like outside the summer season. Weather in the highlands can turn quickly even in good conditions, so bring proper layers.

Landmannalaugar is the most beautiful place

This tour was simply amazing, the tour guide was great and we all had a fantastic experience. Have to tell you to visit Landmannalaugar it is very different from other parts that we travelled to and simply stunning. Did the tour in March and even though we did not see all colors of the mountains because of snow it was just amazing.
Now I have to come back to Iceland to do this tour in summer also.

Simply amazing

Amazing experience on our trip in March. Snow-covered Landmannalaugar were simply breathtaking and different from any place I have ever been to. We live in New York so I we have noise and people everywhere we look so it was simply magical to be there all alone in nature - not seeing anyone or anything except the mountains and surrounding nature.

Landmannalaugar in February

We had the most amazing time on this tour in Landmannalaugar. We did the tour in February and every mountain was 100% snow covered. It truly was a winter wonderland like I have never seen before. Breathtaking experience if you are traveling in winter time.
Also wanted to give a shout out to Heida from Iceland Travel Guide who helped us plan our self driving trip around Iceland and recommended this tour. It was absolutely worth it and our whole trip was simply awesome!

Pictures can’t do it justice

Words don’t do Landmannalaugar justice. The only way to understand its grandeur is to feel it, after a wild Jeep ride and a refreshing dip. Absolutely breathtaking.
