Landmannalaugar, in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, is known for its rhyolite mountains, which weather into shades of pink, green, yellow and orange rather than the black basalt found across most of Iceland. Black lava fields, steaming ground and a natural hot spring, usually 36 to 40°C, complete the landscape. The roads in are F-roads with river crossings, open for this tour from the beginning of June to the end of October, depending on road conditions, and this is where the Laugavegur trail begins.

About the Landmannalaugar private tour

This private tour covers more ground than the standard group departures, combining Landmannalaugar with a wider loop through the southern highlands. Your guide drives a super jeep and sets the pace to suit your group, whether that means more time at the hot spring or extra stops along the way.

The route runs through Þjórsárdalur valley and past the black lava fields at the base of Hekla, one of Iceland's most active volcanoes, then on to the turquoise lake at Frostastaðavatn and the coloured mountains of Landmannalaugar, where you get about 2 hours to hike and soak in the natural hot spring.

On the way back the tour adds Hnausapollur crater, the Sigöldugljúfur canyon, and two of the highlands' better waterfalls, Háifoss and Hjálparfoss, plus the small green oasis at Gjáin. It is a long day, around 11 hours, and the terrain includes river crossings and some hiking, so it suits most fitness levels but is not a gentle sightseeing drive throughout.

Fantastic tour and guide

Had an absolutely fantastic time on this tour in September 2025. Our guide was exceptional and the landscapes of Landmannalaugar and surroundings are breathtaking! Our whole family thought this was the best day of the trip so we absolutely recommend it!

Unforgettable

Our private tour to Landmannalaugar was absolutely unforgettable! The drive through the Icelandic highlands was breathtaking, and our guide made the journey both fun and informative. Once in Landmannalaugar, the colorful rhyolite mountains and geothermal landscapes were even more stunning than we imagined. We hiked up to amazing viewpoints and the scenery was out of this world. Having a private guide made the experience relaxed and flexible. We could explore at our own pace and really enjoy the beauty of the area. Highly recommend this tour if you want to see one of Iceland’s most unique and spectacular places!
