Seljalandsfoss drops 60 metres from what was once the edge of the coastline, before sea levels fell after the last ice age. The Seljalandsá river is fed by meltwater from Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano that erupted in 2010 and grounded flights across Europe. It is one of the few waterfalls in Iceland with a path behind the falling water, so expect to get wet and bring a waterproof jacket.

This is where the Super Jeep earns its keep: the road fords several glacial rivers that change with the weather and time of year, so the timing can shift with conditions. A normal car cannot cross them.

Þórsmörk, 'Thor's Forest', is a sheltered valley in the South Iceland highlands, surrounded by the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. It lies lower than the land around it, so birch woodland, moss and wildflowers grow among black sand, lava and ice. The only way in is by modified 4x4 on the F249 mountain road, which crosses the Krossá river, and the road is generally open from June to September. The Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails both end here.

About the Þórsmörk private tour

Þórsmörk is a green valley tucked between three glaciers, reached only by unbridged rivers that a normal car cannot cross. On this private tour your guide drives a super jeep and sets the pace, so you can linger where you like and skip what you do not.

The day starts with a stop at Seljalandsfoss, where a path lets you walk behind the waterfall itself. From there the route crosses rugged terrain and several rivers on the way to a viewpoint over Gígjökull, the glacier outlet below Eyjafjallajökull, before reaching Þórsmörk. Once there you have time to walk among the birch woods and along the Krossá river.

Being private, the tour can flex around your group, whether that means more time at the rivers, a longer walk in Þórsmörk, or an earlier finish. Weather and river levels can still affect the exact route, since conditions in the highlands change quickly.
