Rough tracks climb through changing terrain toward the glacier. The modified Super Jeep has oversized tyres that let it handle tracks a normal car could not attempt, with a driver who knows the mountain in all conditions.

Eyjafjallajökull is a volcano capped by an ice sheet, 1,651 metres high, standing between the waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss. Its 2010 eruption sent an ash cloud across Europe and grounded flights for days. Most travellers see it as a striking backdrop on the drive along the South Coast, with the glacier visible from Route 1 for a long stretch. To get onto the ice itself you need a guided tour. You get out to look around, take photos and walk a short way onto the glacier itself.

About the Eyjafjallajökull super jeep tour

Eyjafjallajökull is the volcano everyone remembers from 2010, when its ash cloud closed airspace across Europe for days. This tour takes you up onto the glacier that caps it, in a super jeep built for exactly this kind of terrain: big tyres, low pressure, and a driver who knows the mountain in all conditions.

The tour starts from the operator's base near Hvolsvöllur, with pick-up available from wider South Coast areas or from Reykjavík (this adds travel time to the day). Most of the tour is the drive itself, working up through changing terrain to the glacier, with stops to get out, look around and walk a short way onto the ice.

Weather decides a lot up here. Cloud can sit on the glacier and cut the view, and the route can change at short notice if conditions turn. Dress warmly regardless of the season, since it is colder and windier on the mountain than it looks from the road.

Questions people ask

Do we walk on the glacier or just drive to it?

Both. Most of the tour is the super jeep drive, and you get out at the glacier for a short walk on the ice.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, from around age 6, though it is not recommended for anyone with back problems.

Will we see the volcano that erupted in 2010?

Yes, you drive up onto the glacier that caps Eyjafjallajökull itself, the volcano behind the 2010 eruption.

What if the weather is bad?

The route can be adjusted for conditions. Cloud can sit on the glacier and limit the view, but the tour still runs.

Where do we meet?

At Brú Base Camp on road 249, about 5 minutes past Seljalandsfoss, at 10:00.

Highlight of our trip!

This tour was the highlights of our trip to Iceland. It was absolutely magnificent and the views from Eyjafjallajokull were out of this world. Our tour guide, Halli, was great and told us so many interesting stories about Iceland and the area we were visiting.
