A private glacier hike on Sólheimajökull with a certified guide just for your group. You meet at the glacier car park on the south coast and spend about three hours walking on the ice, roped in crampons, with all the safety gear included.
Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier from Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, easy to reach on the south coast and one of the most accessible glaciers in Iceland for a hike. On this private version you get your own certified guide rather than joining a shared group, so the pace can suit families, older travellers, or anyone who wants more time for photos.
After a safety briefing at the car park, your guide fits crampons, helmet, harness and ice axe, then leads you onto the ice for around three hours of walking. You'll see crevasses, meltwater channels and ash layers left by past volcanic eruptions, all features unique to this constantly changing glacier.
The tour is graded moderate: there's some uneven ground and a bit of a scramble in places, but no technical climbing. Minimum age is 8. Weather on the glacier changes quickly, so dress in warm, waterproof layers whatever the season; the ice itself stays cold even on a sunny summer day.
