About the Eyjafjallajökull snowmobile tour

Eyjafjallajökull became known worldwide after its 2010 eruption grounded flights across Europe, and this tour gets you onto the glacier itself. From the Brú Base Camp meeting point near Seljalandsfoss, a super jeep takes you up the mountain, a steep and bumpy ride some guests find more intense than the snowmobiling that follows.

Once on the ice, you get around an hour on the snowmobile, riding in a group with your guide. Two people can usually share a machine and take turns driving during the stops. On a clear day, the views stretch across South Iceland, out towards the Westman Islands and over the highlands.

This is a winter activity, running from November to June depending on snow cover, and it needs reasonable fitness: the super jeep ascent is rough, and riding a snowmobile is more physical than it looks. It's not recommended for anyone with back problems. Drivers must be at least 17 with a valid licence, though younger children can ride as passengers.
