The boat heads into Eyjafjörður, the long fjord Akureyri sits on and a known feeding area for humpback whales. The fjord is more sheltered than open sea, which makes for a calmer ride and good conditions for spotting. Warm overalls are provided for the boat.

About the whale watching Akureyri

Eyjafjörður, the long fjord that Akureyri sits on, is known as one of the more reliable places in Iceland to see whales, especially humpbacks, which feed in these waters for much of the year. This classic tour takes you out by boat to look for them, with a guide on hand to explain what you're seeing.

It's a relaxed trip rather than a physical one: most of the time is spent on deck or in a sheltered cabin watching the water. Warm overalls are provided, which helps, since the wind on deck is cold even in summer.

Departures are more frequent in summer, when the fjord is calmer and days are long, and reduced in winter, sometimes only running with a minimum number of guests. As with any wildlife tour, sightings are likely but never guaranteed.
