You are fitted with a drysuit, thermal undersuit, hood, gloves and fins, and your guide checks the sizing and runs through safety and how to move in the suit. Allow 45 to 60 minutes. The suit keeps you afloat and dry, so no swimming skill is needed.

Silfra is a fissure in Þingvellir where the North American and Eurasian plates are slowly pulling apart. It is filled with glacial meltwater from Langjökull that has been filtered underground through lava for decades, so visibility often exceeds 100 metres, which makes it one of the clearest snorkel and dive sites in the world. The water stays at about 2 to 4°C all year. You snorkel through several named sections of the fissure, including a wider basin known as the Cathedral, in exceptionally clear glacial water.

About the Silfra snorkeling tour

Silfra is a water-filled fissure in Þingvellir National Park where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart. The water comes from Langjökull glacier, filtered through underground lava for years before it reaches the fissure, which is why visibility regularly runs past 100 metres.

You meet your guide at a small parking area near Silfra rather than being picked up, so getting yourself there is part of the plan. Once suited up in a full drysuit, thermal undersuit, hood, gloves and fins, you spend around 3 hours total on site, most of it briefing and gearing up either side of roughly 30–40 minutes actually in the water.

The water sits close to freezing all year, but the drysuit keeps you dry, so it feels more like a cold face than a cold body. It's rated easy: there's no swimming technique needed since the drysuit floats you, and the current does most of the moving. The minimum age is 12, with some flexibility for younger children by arrangement, and anyone 60 or over needs a signed medical form.

Questions people ask

Will I get cold in near-freezing water?

You stay dry inside the drysuit and thermal undersuit, so most people feel cool on the face and hands rather than genuinely cold.

Do I need to know how to swim well?

No. The drysuit is very buoyant, so you float and use gentle fin kicks rather than swimming technique.

Can children snorkel Silfra?

The minimum age is 12; younger children may be considered case by case with extra details sent in advance.

Is transport included?

No, this is a meet-on-location tour, so you need to make your own way to the Silfra car park in Þingvellir.

Really liked this experience

Did this tour with my brother while my wife and kids explored bingvellir. It was an amazing experience, unlike any other activity we have done. The water is crystal clear and it just felt amazing. Great guides, felt very safe. My brother is not the best swimmer but it was no problem. The water did not feel cold - did the tour in March.

Unforgettable experience

The Super Jeep tour of Landmannalaugar was an amazing way to see Iceland’s highlands. The landscapes were surreal, and the guide was informative and fun. Definitely worth it for anyone wanting an adventurous day out.

The best memory

One of the best experiences of my travels around Europe. This was on my top list for Iceland and I do not regret it one second. The guide was great and the colors of Silfra were fascinating. We were in a very small group so we felt safe at all times. The water was cold at first but then we got used to it and I could not feel the cold after I started snorkeling around.
Recommend for anyone traveling to Iceland that wants to add some great experience to their list of memories!

Unreal

Snorkeling in Silfra was like nothing I’ve ever done before. The water was so clear, and it was surreal to swim between tectonic plates. Our guide made sure we were comfortable and safe, and the dry suits kept us warm. A must-do for any adventure lover!
