Your options at a glance

There is no train in Iceland and Uber and Lyft do not operate here, so the choice is a bus, a taxi or a car. All routes use the same road, Route 41 (Reykjanesbraut), across the Reykjanes Peninsula.

  • Flybus to BSÍ Bus Terminal: 3,999 ISK adult, 1,999 ISK for ages 6–15, free for ages 1–5. About 45 minutes.
  • Flybus with hotel drop-off: 5,299 ISK adult, 2,649 ISK for ages 6–15. Adds roughly 30 minutes for the onward leg.
  • Strætó route 55 (public bus): 2,400 ISK adult for Reykjavík, 1,800 ISK for Hafnarfjörður. Slower and less frequent.
  • Taxi with fixed price: 22,500 ISK for 1–4 passengers, 29,250 ISK for 5–8 passengers (Hreyfill fixed rates).
  • Private transfer: usually from about 30,000 ISK per vehicle, with a driver waiting at arrivals.
  • Rental car: pick up at the airport and drive to Reykjavík in about 45 minutes.

Flybus: the simplest choice for most travellers

Flybus is the airport shuttle and it runs in time with flight arrivals. The fare covers the full trip between Keflavík and the BSÍ Bus Terminal in Reykjavík. Buses have free wifi, and standard luggage is included. Odd-sized luggage costs 1,500 ISK and a bicycle costs 3,800 ISK.

The bus also stops at Hamraborg in Kópavogur and Fjörukráin in Hafnarfjörður. If your hotel is in central Reykjavík, the hotel option saves you a walk or a taxi from BSÍ. If you are staying on the edge of town, ask us and we will check the nearest stop.

Return bookings and groups of four or more get an automatic discount. Seats are guaranteed if your flight is delayed, which is worth knowing on winter nights.

Local tip: Book the bus before you fly. Walk-up seats are usually available, but booking gives you a confirmed seat and lets you pick your hotel stop.

Strætó route 55: the budget public bus

Route 55 is Reykjavík's public bus to the airport and runs every day. Fares are 1,800 ISK to Hafnarfjörður and 2,400 ISK to Reykjavík for adults. Youths aged 12–17, seniors over 67 and passengers with a disability pay half, and children up to 11 travel free.

Not every departure reaches BSÍ. Some finish at Fjörður in Hafnarfjörður, so you may need a connection. Check the current timetable on the Strætó site before you rely on it, especially for very early or late flights. Compared with Flybus the saving is modest, so it mainly suits those with time to spare.

Taxi and private transfer

Taxis wait outside arrivals. Hreyfill's fixed fare to Reykjavík is 22,500 ISK for up to four passengers and 29,250 ISK for five to eight. That works out at roughly 5,600 ISK each for a party of four, which is close to the cost of Flybus with hotel drop-off.

A pre-booked private transfer costs more but the driver meets you at arrivals, tracks your flight and takes you to your door. It suits families with strollers, late arrivals and anyone with a lot of luggage.

Local tip: For groups of three or four, a fixed-price taxi can cost the same as buses and takes you straight to your door.

Renting a car at the airport

If you plan to drive the Golden Circle, the South Coast or the Ring Road, pick up your car at Keflavík and go straight from there. Driving in Reykjavík is easy, but parking in the centre is paid and hotels often charge extra for it. If you only need a car for part of your stay, collect it on the day you leave the city. If you would rather not drive at all, our Golden Circle Private Tour from Reykjavík takes you round Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss with your own local guide.

Book early for summer, when cars sell out. In winter, ask for winter tyres and check road conditions on road.is before you set off. Our public transport guide explains how far buses will take you if you would rather not drive.

Stop at the Blue Lagoon on your way

The Blue Lagoon is about 23 km from the airport and sits on the route to Reykjavík, so many people go straight from arrivals. Shuttles take about 30 minutes to the lagoon, and about 45–50 minutes from the lagoon on to Reykjavík. You must book your lagoon entry first, and slots fill up in peak season. If you would rather go once you are settled in, our Blue Lagoon from Reykjavík tour runs from May to September with return transport, lagoon entry and lunch.

Luggage can be stored at the lagoon for a fee. On departure day, leave the lagoon at least 2.5 hours before international check-in closes. See our Sky Lagoon vs Blue Lagoon comparison if you are choosing between the two.

Volcanic activity and your transfer

The Reykjanes Peninsula has seen a series of eruptions since 2021. As of late summer 2026 there is no eruption under way. The last one ended on 5 August 2025, and the Icelandic Met Office continues to report magma building beneath Svartsengi.

Keflavík Airport, Route 41, Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon were all open at the time of writing. The eruptions have been short and the airport has kept operating. If an eruption starts during your trip, follow the instructions of the authorities and keep out of closed zones. Check the Visit Reykjanes site and safetravel.is before you travel.
