Fagradalsfjall is a volcanic system on the Reykjanes Peninsula that woke in March 2021 after about 6,000 years, the first eruption on the peninsula in almost 800 years. Two more followed at Fagradalsfjall in 2022 and 2023, and since December 2023 the eruptions have been at Sundhnúksgígar near Grindavík. Whether you can hike to the craters depends on current activity. You walk out across lava fields from the Reykjanes Peninsula's volcanic activity, with your guide explaining what happened and when.

Kleifarvatn is the largest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 9.1 km² and around 97 metres deep, which makes it one of the deepest lakes in Iceland. It lies below the steep ridge of Sveifluháls, close to the Seltún geothermal area, in a stark landscape of thick moss-covered lava, with steam rising from hot springs in several places.

Gunnuhver sits where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs through the Reykjanes peninsula and the ground is thin and active. It has one of the largest mud pools in the country, a roiling grey pit about 20 metres wide, surrounded by steam vents and sulphur-stained ground. Raised boardwalks let you get close without stepping onto the unstable, superheated crust, so stay on them.

Reykjanestá is the bare, wind-scoured southwestern tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge comes ashore, with sea cliffs, stacks, the Valahnúkamöl boulder ridge and geothermal steam. Iceland's first lighthouse was built here in 1878, but earthquakes and erosion damaged it so badly that a replacement was built inland in 1907 to 1908. That newer lighthouse, about 26 metres tall, is still in use, though it is not open inside to visitors.

The Bridge Between Continents is a footbridge, about 15 metres long, built in 2002 over a rift on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The fissure below is part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the Eurasian and North American plates are slowly pulling apart by roughly 2 to 2.5 centimetres a year, and it is one of the few places on land where you can walk from one plate to the other in a few seconds.

About the volcano hike Reykjanes sightseeing

This tour pairs the Fagradalsfjall and Meradalir volcano hike with a wider look at the Reykjanes Peninsula's geothermal and geological sights. After the hike, up to 2 hours each way over graded and rougher terrain, the tour continues by coach to Gunnuhver, Iceland's largest hot mud spring, then on to Reykjanesviti, Iceland's oldest lighthouse, and the Bridge Between Continents, a footbridge over the rift between the North American and Eurasian plates.

Depending on how long the hike takes and the weather, your guide may also add stops at Lake Kleifarvatn or the Seltún geothermal area, though these aren't guaranteed. The whole day runs about 9 hours, with pick-up in central Reykjavík at the start.

The hike itself is rated medium difficulty, and the minimum age for the tour overall is 6, lower than some of the operator's other volcano hikes, though the hiking portion still needs reasonable fitness and sturdy shoes. As with all outdoor tours on the peninsula, weather and access to the eruption sites can change, so the exact route is confirmed closer to the day.
