Fagradalsfjall is a volcanic system on the Reykjanes Peninsula that woke in March 2021 after about 6,000 years, the first eruption on the peninsula in almost 800 years. Two more followed at Fagradalsfjall in 2022 and 2023, and since December 2023 the eruptions have been at Sundhnúksgígar near Grindavík. Whether you can hike to the craters depends on current activity. You walk across lava fields from the Reykjanes Peninsula's recent volcanic activity, with your guide explaining the eruptions and geology.

The Blue Lagoon is a milky-blue geothermal spa on the Reykjanes peninsula. The water is geothermal seawater from the nearby Svartsengi power plant, rich in silica and minerals, and it stays at 37 to 40°C all year, whatever the weather outside. The silica gives the water its blue-white colour and a slightly cloudy, mineral feel. The lagoon holds about nine million litres, renewed roughly every 40 hours. Time to relax in the milky-blue geothermal water after the hike.

About the volcano hike and Blue Lagoon tour

This tour pairs a hike out to the Fagradalsfjall and Meradalir eruption sites on the Reykjanes Peninsula with a stop at the Blue Lagoon, so you get both an active morning and a relaxed afternoon in one day. The hike covers recent lava fields from the peninsula's ongoing volcanic activity, roughly 2 hours each way over a mix of graded and rougher, uneven terrain.

After the hike, the tour continues to the Blue Lagoon for around 2 hours. The admission included is the Comfort tier, with a towel, silica mud mask and one drink, so bring your swimsuit. The whole day runs about 9 hours, with pick-up from central Reykjavík at the start and drop-off at the end.

It's rated medium difficulty and needs reasonable fitness for the hike, with a minimum age of 12. Iceland's weather changes fast, so waterproof and warm layers matter even in summer, and your guide will adjust the plan if conditions on the peninsula require it.

The best day!

Some of our favorite Iceland memories are from this incredible day. We saw so much on this tour, a beautiful lake, the volcano area where the active volcano created the boiling mud and new lava fields, some historical sites, and the hike to the volcanic eruption was absolutely excellent. It was the perfect end to a great day to relax at the Blue Lagoon. Our guide was excellent, I will recommend to my friends that they book this tour when they visit Iceland.

Amazing Tour

Me and my daughter had the most amazing time on this tour. The sites were breathtaking and the Blue Lagoon had been on our bucket list for years! Finally our dream came true on this day and it was amazing to see the volcanic fields as well.
