Kleifarvatn is the largest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 9.1 km² and around 97 metres deep, which makes it one of the deepest lakes in Iceland. It lies below the steep ridge of Sveifluháls, close to the Seltún geothermal area, in a stark landscape of thick moss-covered lava, with steam rising from hot springs in several places.

Krýsuvík is a geothermal system on the Reykjanes Peninsula, and Seltún is the part most visitors see: a compact hillside of bubbling mud pots, hissing steam vents and mineral-stained ground in yellows, reds and greys. Wooden walkways and viewing platforms let you get close without stepping on the ground, which is fragile and can be scalding hot. Keep to the boardwalks.

Grindavík is a fishing town on the Reykjanes peninsula, close to the Blue Lagoon. Before 2023 it had around 3,000 residents. Since an earthquake swarm in October 2023 and the eruptions that followed, the town has been evacuated more than once, and access depends on current advice from the authorities.

Gunnuhver hot springsGunnuhver hot springsGunnuhver hot springs

Gunnuhver sits where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs through the Reykjanes peninsula and the ground is thin and active. It has one of the largest mud pools in the country, a roiling grey pit about 20 metres wide, surrounded by steam vents and sulphur-stained ground. Raised boardwalks let you get close without stepping onto the unstable, superheated crust, so stay on them.

The Bridge Between Continents is a footbridge, about 15 metres long, built in 2002 over a rift on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The fissure below is part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the Eurasian and North American plates are slowly pulling apart by roughly 2 to 2.5 centimetres a year, and it is one of the few places on land where you can walk from one plate to the other in a few seconds.

About the Reykjanes Geopark tour

The Reykjanes Peninsula is one of the youngest parts of Iceland, built almost entirely from lava and geothermal heat. This tour takes you around its main sights in a small-group minibus, with a driver-guide who explains the geology and recent volcanic activity as you go. It runs all year, which makes it a good option in winter when many highland areas are closed.

The route passes Kleifarvatn, a deep lake with no visible outflow, and the geothermal area at Krýsuvík, where the ground steams and bubbles with sulphur smells in the air. From there you continue to Grindavík, a fishing town that has been close to recent eruptions, before reaching Gunnuhver, Iceland's largest mud pool, and the lighthouse at Reykjanesviti.

Walking on this tour is easy and mostly on marked paths and boardwalks around the geothermal areas. Weather on the peninsula can be windy and changeable, so bring a warm layer even in summer. The tour can also be booked with a drop-off at Keflavík Airport or the Blue Lagoon instead of returning to Reykjavík, which suits people flying out the same day.

Beautiful sightseeing day on our last day in Iceland - Super convenient airport drop off!

Super convenient way to end our amazing trip to Iceland! The guide picked us up in the morning from our hotel. This was our last day so we had already packed our bags and were waiting at the bus stop next to our hotel. We were picked up by the minibus and went for an amazing sightseeing day around the volcano peninsula. Super beautiful area, great guide and comfortable minibus. At the end of the day the guide dropped us off at the airport, just in time for our check in to go back home. Could not ask for a better way to end our trip to Iceland!
