Kerið craterKerið craterKerið crater

Kerið is a volcanic crater about 270 metres long, 170 metres wide and 55 metres deep, with a blue-green lake at the bottom. Unlike the black basalt found almost everywhere nearby, its walls are deep red, from oxidised volcanic rock. It is thought to have formed when a magma chamber emptied and the ground above collapsed, rather than in a violent explosion. You can walk the rim and, where allowed, down to the water. There is a small entry fee. You can walk around the rim or take the steps down to the water.

FriðheimarFriðheimarFriðheimar

Friðheimar is a family-run tomato farm in Reykholt, on the Golden Circle route. Tomatoes grow all year in geothermally heated greenhouses, using pure spring water and biological pest control instead of chemical sprays, and under electric lights through the dark winter months. The restaurant sits inside one of the greenhouses, so you eat surrounded by the plants that produced the food on your plate.

GullfossGullfossGullfoss

Gullfoss, the Golden Falls, drops about 32 metres in two steps into a narrow canyon roughly 70 metres deep and 2.5 kilometres long. The water comes from the Hvítá river, which is fed by the glacier Langjökull. Glacial water often turns golden-brown in sunlight, and rainbows hang in the spray on bright days. A path with stairs leads down to a lower level, closer to the water.

GeysirGeysirGeysir

Geysir gave every geyser in the world its name. The original Great Geysir now erupts only rarely, sometimes after earthquakes, so the show is Strokkur, a short walk away. It throws boiling water 15 to 20 metres into the air every 5 to 10 minutes, and sometimes a good deal higher, so you will see several eruptions while you are here. Keep to the paths between the pools and stay behind the ropes, as the water is very hot.

Þingvellir National ParkÞingvellir National ParkÞingvellir National Park

Þingvellir is where Iceland's parliament, the Alþingi, first met in 930, and it lies in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian plates are pulling apart. Chieftains gathered here every summer, laws were recited from the Lögberg (Law Rock), and the plain below still shows where the assembly booths stood. The lake beside it, Þingvallavatn, is the largest natural lake in Iceland. The park is free to enter and open all year. You walk through the Almannagjá rift at the edge of the North American plate.

About the Golden Circle and Sky Lagoon tour

This Golden Circle and Sky Lagoon tour packs a lot into one day. You cover the classic loop east of Reykjavík, add Kerið crater and a visit to the Friðheimar farm, and finish with a soak in Sky Lagoon on the coast just outside the city.

At Friðheimar a family grows tomatoes all year in greenhouses heated with geothermal energy. You get a short tour of the greenhouse, a horse show with Icelandic horses, and tomato tasting with coffee or tea. A table is reserved for lunch, and the tomato soup buffet is the dish most people order, but lunch is paid for on the spot.

Sky Lagoon is a geothermal lagoon with an infinity edge looking over the ocean. The Saman Pass includes the 7-step ritual: the warm lagoon, a cold plunge, a sauna with a sea view, a cool mist, a body scrub and a steam room. It is a relaxed way to end a long day of sightseeing.

It is a long day, about 10.5 to 11 hours, but the walking is easy. In winter daylight is short and paths at Gullfoss and Geysir can be icy, so bring shoes with good grip. In summer the main stops are busy in the middle of the day.

Great set up - our best day in Iceland

This day was the best day of our trip to Iceland. The views from the Sky Lagoon are exceptional and it was very nice to end the day there, have a drink at the bar in the Sky lagoon and have a ride with the minibus back to our hotel in downtown Reykjavik.
