Kerið craterKerið craterKerið crater

Kerið is a volcanic crater about 270 metres long, 170 metres wide and 55 metres deep, with a blue-green lake at the bottom. Unlike the black basalt found almost everywhere nearby, its walls are deep red, from oxidised volcanic rock. It is thought to have formed when a magma chamber emptied and the ground above collapsed, rather than in a violent explosion. You can walk the rim and, where allowed, down to the water. There is a small entry fee.

Gullfoss, the Golden Falls, drops about 32 metres in two steps into a narrow canyon roughly 70 metres deep and 2.5 kilometres long. The water comes from the Hvítá river, which is fed by the glacier Langjökull. Glacial water often turns golden-brown in sunlight, and rainbows hang in the spray on bright days. A path with stairs leads down to a lower level, closer to the water.

Geysir geothermal areaGeysir geothermal areaGeysir geothermal area

Geysir gave every geyser in the world its name. The original Great Geysir now erupts only rarely, sometimes after earthquakes, so the show is Strokkur, a short walk away. It throws boiling water 15 to 20 metres into the air every 5 to 10 minutes, and sometimes a good deal higher, so you will see several eruptions while you are here. Keep to the paths between the pools and stay behind the ropes, as the water is very hot.

Þingvellir National ParkÞingvellir National ParkÞingvellir National Park

Þingvellir is where Iceland's parliament, the Alþingi, first met in 930, and it lies in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian plates are pulling apart. Chieftains gathered here every summer, laws were recited from the Lögberg (Law Rock), and the plain below still shows where the assembly booths stood. The lake beside it, Þingvallavatn, is the largest natural lake in Iceland. The park is free to enter and open all year. You walk through Almannagjá, a rift at the edge of the North American plate.

About the Golden Circle Friðheimar tour

This is the classic Golden Circle with two extra stops that make the day feel less like a sightseeing checklist. You start at Kerið, a red volcanic crater with a blue-green lake, and then spend time at Friðheimar, a family farm that grows tomatoes all year under grow lights, heated with geothermal water.

At Friðheimar you see how the greenhouses work, taste the tomatoes and watch a short show with the farm's Icelandic horses. A table is reserved for you in the greenhouse restaurant, where lunch is served among the tomato plants. Lunch is paid for on the spot.

In the afternoon you continue to Gullfoss, Geysir and Þingvellir National Park. Walks are short and mostly on good paths, but they can be icy in winter, so shoes with a good grip help. Winter daylight is short and the weather changes fast, so the order of stops can change.

The tour runs in a minibus, so there is less waiting than on a big coach. Summer is the busiest time at Geysir and Gullfoss; the group still moves quickly because it is small.

Favorite Tour of the trip

This tour was an absolute highlight of our Iceland trip! The Golden Circle offered so many incredible sights, but my favorite stops were Kerid Crater and Friðheimar. The Kerid Crater was stunning with its vibrant blue lake, surrounded by red volcanic rock – definitely a memorable sight. The visit to Friðheimar was equally special. Learning about the greenhouse farming while enjoying their fresh tomato soup was such a unique experience! It was fascinating to see how they grow tomatoes in the heart of Iceland. This tour was a perfect mix of natural beauty and local culture. Highly recommend it!
