The Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) lie just off Iceland's south coast, and Heimaey is the only inhabited island. Ships come into the sheltered harbour, which was nearly closed by lava in the 1973 eruption. In one day you can walk on a young volcano, see the town that was buried in ash, and, in summer, watch one of the largest puffin colonies in the world.

Yes, the town, the harbour and the start of the Eldfell trail are all within walking distance.
A volcanic eruption began on the edge of town, and the whole population was evacuated overnight. Lava added new land to the island and almost closed the harbour.
