Þingvellir is where Iceland's parliament, the Alþingi, first met in 930, and it lies in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian plates are pulling apart. Chieftains gathered here every summer, laws were recited from the Lögberg (Law Rock), and the plain below still shows where the assembly booths stood. The lake beside it, Þingvallavatn, is the largest natural lake in Iceland. The park is free to enter and open all year.

4Geysir and StrokkurGeysir and StrokkurHot springs, with Strokkur erupting every few minutes.
Geysir and StrokkurGeysir and StrokkurStrokkur geyser erupting at sunrise

Geysir gave every geyser in the world its name. The original Great Geysir now erupts only rarely, sometimes after earthquakes, so the show is Strokkur, a short walk away. It throws boiling water 15 to 20 metres into the air every 5 to 10 minutes, and sometimes a good deal higher, so you will see several eruptions while you are here. Keep to the paths between the pools and stay behind the ropes, as the water is very hot.

Gullfoss, the Golden Falls, drops about 32 metres in two steps into a narrow canyon roughly 70 metres deep and 2.5 kilometres long. The water comes from the Hvítá river, which is fed by the glacier Langjökull. Glacial water often turns golden-brown in sunlight, and rainbows hang in the spray on bright days. A path with stairs leads down to a lower level, closer to the water.

About the private Golden Circle snowmobile tour

This private tour combines the Golden Circle with snowmobiling on Langjökull, with your own driver-guide and vehicle instead of a shared bus. Your guide picks you up at your accommodation in Reykjavík at 9:00, and the whole day takes about 10 hours.

You visit Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir area, where Strokkur erupts every few minutes, and Gullfoss waterfall. Because the tour is private, your guide can add stops that suit your group, such as ice cream at Efstidalur farm or the Friðheimar tomato greenhouse, and a few lesser-known stops along the way.

The day ends on Langjökull glacier, where the snowmobile experience takes 3 to 4 hours. The ride is included, with two people sharing one snowmobile. The driver needs a valid driving licence. Glacier and road conditions can change fast, so timings may be delayed and the snowmobile part can be cancelled because of the weather.

Great tour with short notice

We booked last minute and this tour was still flawless. Guide handled everything smoothly—gear, safety, logistics. Golden Circle was beautiful as usual, but the snowmobile was what I’ll remember most: speed, wind, ice, views. Cold wind on the face, joy in the heart. Couldn’t recommend it more.

Private Tour definitely worth it

This private version made the difference. No big crowds, more time at each Golden Circle stop, and then the thrill of snowmobiling. The guide was patient and made sure we felt confident on the snowmobile. The day was cold but packed with adrenaline and beauty. Really happy we chose private.

Thrilling Adventure with a Personal Touch

Loved combining the classic Golden Circle with a snowmobile ride. Felt adventurous but never unsafe—our guide was awesome. He explained how things work, helped us with gear, and made sure everyone got to ride. The views from the snowmobile over snow fields—with the waterfalls and geysers in the distance—unforgettable.

Best Day

This was one of the coolest tours I’ve done. The Golden Circle stops were so iconic—Geysir, Gullfoss, Tingvellir—and the snowmobile ride made it next-level. Our private guide was exceptional—really safety conscious and full of enthusiasm. Cloud cover cleared just as we set off on the snowmobile and the view over the glacier was insane. Highly recommend!
