2HjálparfossHjálparfossA double waterfall framed by basalt columns in Þjórsárdalur.
HjálparfossHjálparfossHjálparfoss

Hjálparfoss means 'Help Falls'. It is a twin waterfall where the Fossá river splits into two falls just before it joins the Þjórsá, Iceland's longest river. Travellers heading into the highlands used to stop here to rest their horses and let them graze along the riverbanks before the harder ground inland, and the name has stuck.

Landmannalaugar, in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, is known for its rhyolite mountains, which weather into shades of pink, green, yellow and orange rather than the black basalt found across most of Iceland. Black lava fields, steaming ground and a natural hot spring, usually 36 to 40°C, complete the landscape. The roads in are F-roads with river crossings, generally open from late June to early September, and this is where the Laugavegur trail begins.

6HáifossHáifossOne of Iceland's tallest waterfalls, next to its neighbour Granni.
HáifossHáifossHáifoss

Háifoss drops about 122 metres from the edge of the highlands into a deep canyon cut by the Fossá river, with the smaller Granni waterfall tumbling beside it. The setting is bare highland terrain, a narrow gorge and, on a clear day, a view towards Hekla. It is quieter than the South Coast waterfalls, partly because the last 7 kilometres of road are gravel and need a 4x4 with good clearance.

Walking · short walk to the viewpoint on the canyon edgeTip · stay behind the edge; there are no fences

About the Landmannalaugar tour from Reykjavík

Landmannalaugar is in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the Highlands, and it only opens when the mountain roads do, usually from June. The hills here are rhyolite, so they come in shades of orange, pink, green and grey, cut by black obsidian lava. You cannot drive there in a normal car, which is why a 4x4 bus tour is the easy way in.

The day is long, about 13 hours, and much of it is driving on gravel and rough Highland roads. In return you get around four hours at Landmannalaugar. Your guide leads an optional hike of 1.5–2 hours on the loop through the Laugahraun lava field and Grænagil gorge, about 4.5 km on uneven, rocky ground. If you want more of a climb, you can hike up Bláhnúkur on your own instead, which takes about 2.5–3 hours.

After the walk you can bathe in the natural hot spring by the hut. The water is warmer where the hot stream flows in, and cooler further away. There is no restaurant in Landmannalaugar, only a small shop with snacks, so bring a packed lunch.

The weather in the Highlands can change fast, even in July. Bring a proper rain jacket, warm layers and good shoes, and expect wind, rain or sun on the same day.

Breathtaking

This was our favorite day tour we did on our week long trip to Iceland. Landmannalaugar is a breathtaking place and I would love to go there again if I get the chance.
The guide was very friendly. The hike was beautiful and the colorful mountains were out of this world!

Highly recommend

I went on two tours with them and had an amazing experience both times! The team is incredibly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I learned so much about Iceland’s history and culture during the tours. They also include thoughtful surprises and even show you a little something extra if the weather cooperates and the group stays on schedule. The drivers are very safe, which made the journey even more enjoyable. I highly recommend booking with them!

Magnificent experience

This was such a great tour to Landmannalaugar. We really wanted to visit Landmannalaugar on our trip in the end of May but the roads were closed. We found this tour and contacted Iceland Travel Guide to see if they would be able to drive there. They told us they could do it and we booked the tour. The tour was absolutely amazing. We had the best time and Landmannalaugar is simply magnificent! I know this might not be a part of a regular itinerary when visting Iceland, but I will tell everyone I know that are coming to the country to go there, for sure!
