The highland F-road is only open in summer, and the drive gives you a first look at the changing landscape as the green lowlands give way to lava and mountain. Weather in the highlands can change quickly, so pack for all conditions.

Laugahraun is a relatively young lava field and forms part of the trail into the coloured mountains. You walk across the black lava, which shaped the whole area around Landmannalaugar.

The walk climbs gradually, at an easy pace, past the Vondugil canyon and up onto the slopes of Brennisteinsalda, meaning sulphur ridge, streaked with reds, greens and yellows from mineral deposits and geothermal activity.

A short, striking descent through a narrow, moss-lined gorge that most people find one of the best parts of the hike. It leads back towards the hot spring where the hike ends.

Landmannalaugar, in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, is known for its rhyolite mountains, which weather into shades of pink, green, yellow and orange rather than the black basalt found across most of Iceland. Black lava fields, steaming ground and a natural hot spring, usually 36 to 40°C, complete the landscape. The roads in are F-roads with river crossings, generally open from late June to early September, and this is where the Laugavegur trail begins.

About the Landmannalaugar hiking tour

Landmannalaugar is one of the most photographed corners of the Icelandic highlands, known for mountains streaked orange, green and pink by different minerals in the rock. This tour gets you there and back from Reykjavík in a single long day, with a guided hike once you arrive.

The hike itself covers about 6.5 km on clear trails through the black Laugahraun lava field, along Vondugil canyon, up part of Brennisteinsalda mountain and down through Grænagil, known as the Green Gorge. It is rated easy by the operator, suiting most people in reasonable shape, though the highland setting means weather can change quickly even in summer.

The day ends the way many highland hikes do in Iceland, with a soak in a natural hot spring right by the huts. Because the highland road to Landmannalaugar is only open in summer, this tour runs June to September, and because of the drive it makes for a long day out, so bring food and water for the whole trip.

Fabulous day in the highlands

A great way to explore Iceland with hiking. We had been all around Iceland, and this was the time to explore the unique highlands of Iceland! The guide was fantastic and kept close watch over the group and shared a lot of great information about the area with us. Visiting Iceland for the first time was an extraordinary experience. We were not familiar with Landmannalaugar, and having a guided group for our first excursion here was worth it. The hike is not overly technical, but it is moderately long and includes a mountain ascent, so good physical health is recommended. The effort is well rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Iceland’s colorful rhyolite mountains, the country’s largest obsidian lava field, and the dramatic surrounding landscapes.
