A full day in the highlands. A 4x4 takes you from Reykjavík or Hella to Landmannalaugar, where a guide leads you for about five hours through mountains of orange, pink and green rhyolite, over lava and past steaming vents. Afterwards there is time to bathe in the warm natural hot spring.
Landmannalaugar is in the Fjallabak nature reserve in the southern highlands, about four hours from Reykjavík. Its mountains are made of rhyolite, a volcanic rock that gives them their colours, and the area is also known for its lava fields of black obsidian and its natural hot spring.
The highland roads are only open in summer, so this tour runs from June to September. The tour is guided in Spanish and English, with one guide for every 16 guests.
It is a long day with about five hours of hiking on uneven trails. You need good walking shoes, clothes for changing weather and your own food and water for the day.
