Þingvellir National ParkÞingvellir National ParkÞingvellir National Park

Þingvellir is where Iceland's parliament, the Alþingi, first met in 930, and it lies in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian plates are pulling apart. Chieftains gathered here every summer, laws were recited from the Lögberg (Law Rock), and the plain below still shows where the assembly booths stood. The lake beside it, Þingvallavatn, is the largest natural lake in Iceland. The park is free to enter and open all year. Iceland's parliament first met here in 930, and you walk through Almannagjá, a rift at the edge of the North American plate.

3Geysir geothermal areaGeysir geothermal areaStrokkur erupts every 5–10 minutes.
Geysir geothermal areaGeysir geothermal areaGeysir geothermal area

Geysir gave every geyser in the world its name. The original Great Geysir now erupts only rarely, sometimes after earthquakes, so the show is Strokkur, a short walk away. It throws boiling water 15 to 20 metres into the air every 5 to 10 minutes, and sometimes a good deal higher, so you will see several eruptions while you are here. Keep to the paths between the pools and stay behind the ropes, as the water is very hot.

GullfossGullfossGullfoss

Gullfoss, the Golden Falls, drops about 32 metres in two steps into a narrow canyon roughly 70 metres deep and 2.5 kilometres long. The water comes from the Hvítá river, which is fed by the glacier Langjökull. Glacial water often turns golden-brown in sunlight, and rainbows hang in the spray on bright days. A path with stairs leads down to a lower level, closer to the water.

Kerið craterKerið craterKerið crater

Kerið is a volcanic crater about 270 metres long, 170 metres wide and 55 metres deep, with a blue-green lake at the bottom. Unlike the black basalt found almost everywhere nearby, its walls are deep red, from oxidised volcanic rock. It is thought to have formed when a magma chamber emptied and the ground above collapsed, rather than in a violent explosion. You can walk the rim and, where allowed, down to the water. There is a small entry fee.

The Blue Lagoon is a milky-blue geothermal spa on the Reykjanes peninsula. The water is geothermal seawater from the nearby Svartsengi power plant, rich in silica and minerals, and it stays at 37 to 40°C all year, whatever the weather outside. The silica gives the water its blue-white colour and a slightly cloudy, mineral feel. The lagoon holds about nine million litres, renewed roughly every 40 hours. Your Comfort ticket includes a towel, a silica mud mask and a first drink.

About the Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon tour

This tour puts two of Iceland's best-known day trips into one long day. In the morning and early afternoon you drive the Golden Circle: the rift valley at Þingvellir, the hot springs at Geysir and the big waterfall at Gullfoss, with a stop at Kerið crater on the way back.

The day ends at the Blue Lagoon on the Reykjanes Peninsula, where you have 2 to 3 hours in the warm, milky-blue water. Your Comfort ticket includes a towel, a silica mud mask and a first drink at the in-water bar. Bring a swimsuit, or rent one there.

It is a long day of 11–12 hours, so it suits people who want to see a lot in a short stay. The walks are short and easy, but in winter paths can be icy and daylight is short. Food is not included; the guide stops where you can buy lunch.

The minimum age is 14. If you travel with younger children, a separate Golden Circle tour plus a Blue Lagoon visit on another day works better.

Great mix of the day

Really liked this version of the Golden Circle tour since it also included the Blue Lagoon. We only had 3 full days in Iceland so doing this tour as well as the 2 day south coast tour was the perfect plan for us to see and do everything we wanted to in only 3 days.
Beautiful day with great stops, thingvellir was my favorite but my husband loved the waterfall. The Blue Lagoon was also stunning and a great way to end a full day of outdoor exploring!

Excellent choice

This tour was an excellent choice for us since we wanted to see so much on our trip and the Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle were both high on our list. We also loved that this was a small group tour so we traveled around in a comfortable minibus that was not overly crowded.
Golden circle was of course beautiful and love to see geyser erupt. Blue lagoon was also well worth it and not a hype in my opinion.

Fantastic experience

Had a fantastic time exploring the Golden Circle and then ending the day at the Blue Lagoon was simply perfect. Recommend to do it as a small group tour if you can - it was absolutely worth it.

The best day

We had the best time on this tour to the Golden Circle and the Blue lagoon. The sighs on the golden circle were stunning - our guide was the best - the Blue Lagoon has been on our bucket list for a long time and did not disappoint.
Will recommend this tour to anyone traveling to Iceland.

The perfect combination of true Icelandic nature and relaxation and luxury. We loved everything on this tour and are happy that we decided to do the small group tour. The guide and group was fantastic and the Blue Lagoon was exceptional.

Best tour!

This tour was the perfect mix of Icelandic nature and relaxation. We saw stunning geysers, waterfalls, and Þingvellir National Park—all in one day. Ending the day soaking in the Blue Lagoon was pure magic. Highly recommend for first-time visitors!
