Jökulsárlón is a lagoon filled with icebergs that calve from Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, and drift slowly out towards the sea. It formed in the 1930s as the glacier retreated, and has grown from about 8 km² in the 1970s to roughly 25 km² today. At over 280 metres deep it is the deepest lake in Iceland. It is free to view from the shore.

Diamond Beach is a black sand beach directly opposite Jökulsárlón. Chunks of ice break off Breiðamerkurjökull, drift across the lagoon and out to sea under the Ring Road bridge, and the current pushes many of them back onto the sand, where they melt slowly and catch the light like scattered diamonds. It is a short walk under the bridge from the lagoon, and entry is free.

A photo stop by the Hvalnes lighthouse, with views of Eystrahorn, a steep mountain of about 756 metres that rises straight from the coast in a cluster of sharp peaks. It is a quieter stop that most cruise tours skip.

About the glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach tour from Djúpivogur

This is a long coach day out along Iceland's south-east coast, run to fit around your ship's call at Djúpivogur. Most of the day is on the road, but the two main stops are worth it: Jökulsárlón is a deep lagoon at the edge of Vatnajökull where icebergs calve off the glacier tongue and drift slowly toward the sea, and Diamond Beach is the black sand shore just across the road, where chunks of that ice wash up and glitter against the dark sand.

On the way back your guide stops at Eystrahorn, a striking, jagged mountain on the coast that most visitors to this part of Iceland never see up close. The pace is easy: this is a sightseeing tour, not a hike, and the walking at each stop is short and level.

Because it runs from May to September, you get long daylight and generally calmer weather, though wind and rain along this stretch of coast can still change quickly, so bring a warm, waterproof layer even in summer.

Great tour and guide

Did this tour on our cruise in August 2026 and we had a great time! Comfortable ride, Joi was a great guide and we could not have asked for a better day on our stop in east Iceland.
