Talk to a local

This Djúpivogur wildlife tour by boat takes you out from the harbour to see puffins and other seabirds nesting along the cliffs of East Iceland, with a local captain who adjusts the route to the weather and the birds.
Djúpivogur is a small harbour town in East Iceland, and this boat trip is a simple, easy way to see the coastline and its birdlife from the water instead of the road. The captain knows the local waters well and points out seals, puffins and other seabirds along the cliffs and skerries nearby, and now and then whales.
This is a weather-dependent trip. Because it runs in open, small boats, the captain may adjust the route, shorten the trip, or cancel altogether if the sea is too rough, and departure times are confirmed close to the day. Puffins are around during the summer nesting season, so this is best done between May and September.
Dress warmly even in summer. It is colder on open water than on land, and you will be given a flotation suit and life jacket, but a hat and gloves make the ride much more comfortable.
Puffins nest along this coast in summer, but sightings depend on the season and the weather, so they can't be guaranteed.
The captain may shorten the route or cancel the trip for safety. Departure times are confirmed close to the day.
It can be, even in summer. You'll be given a flotation suit, but bring a hat and gloves too.
