The road out of Seyðisfjörður climbs steeply over a mountain pass before descending into the neighbouring fjord, with views over waterfalls and steep valley sides. It is a gravel mountain road, manageable only by 4x4, in a Super Jeep carrying up to 10 passengers. The weather can change the route.

About the East Fjords Super Jeep tour

Mjóifjörður means narrow fjord, and it lives up to its name: a steep-sided inlet reached by a gravel mountain road that closes in winter and is only manageable by 4x4. This tour takes you there by Super Jeep from Seyðisfjörður, on a route most visitors never see.

The drive itself is part of the experience, climbing over a mountain pass with views back over Seyðisfjörður before dropping down into Mjóifjörður. Along the way you pass waterfalls and steep valley walls, and the guide points out the landscape and its history. At the bottom, the fjord holds a village of only a handful of year-round residents.

This is a sightseeing tour from the vehicle with short stops for photos, rather than a hiking trip, so it suits most fitness levels and ages. Because it depends on a mountain road, the itinerary can change, or the tour can be cancelled, if the weather or road conditions are bad.

Questions people ask

Why do you need a Super Jeep for this?

The road into Mjóifjörður is a gravel mountain pass that ordinary cars and buses can't manage. A 4x4 vehicle is needed year round, and the road can close entirely in winter.

Is there much walking?

No, this is mainly a scenic drive with photo stops rather than a hiking tour.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The route or timing may change, or the tour may be cancelled, since it depends on a mountain road that isn't always passable.

Can I be picked up somewhere other than Seyðisfjörður?

Yes, pick-up is also available at Eskifjörður harbour.

Exceptionally interesting and enjoyable!

This Super Jeep tour tour was most interesting, and great value for money. Our guide was exceptional, and went the extra mile to satisfy the visitors on the tour.

Dream about this day!

I have no words for this tour! It was everything I had dreamed of when planning a trip to Iceland.
Before arriving in Iceland we had heard that some of the best locations were very crowded with tourists. I really don't like that and that is why I decided to book this tour and another one in Isafjordur with this local company. Both tours were excellent. The guide on this tour was not the same as the one in Isafjordur since the two harbors are located hours away from each other, but the guides were both excellent. The woman on this tour was from the region and told us about the history and some fun stories along the way. We drove in a jeep to a BEAUTIFUL location and we saw no other people! This was something I have never experienced in my life and I dream about doing it again every day!
I am telling all my friends about this tour if they go to Iceland on a cruise!
