About Reykjaböð Hot Springs

Reykjaböð sits where the Reykjadalur valley begins, above the greenhouse town of Hveragerði, an area known for its steaming hillsides and hot springs. It is one of the newest places to bathe in Iceland and is smaller and quieter than the big lagoons near Reykjavík.

The lagoon is natural and chlorine-free, at 37 to 40°C depending on the area. Beside it is an outdoor ritual area with a sauna, cold plunge pools and a Kneipp pool, where you move between warm and cold water. There is a bar in the water and Réttir Restaurant inside.

The Bathhouse is a separate, adults-only part for guests with the Signature admission. It has a snow room, a steam bath, a herbal pool, a float pool, a sauna, experience showers, a fire pit and relaxation areas, and you can add a massage or another treatment to your visit.

Because it is close to Route 1, Reykjaböð fits easily into a day on the South Coast or the Golden Circle, usually as a stop on the way back to Reykjavík. It is also an easy place to warm up after hiking to the hot river in Reykjadalur.

Reykjaböð or the Reykjadalur hike?

The two are often confused because they share a valley, but they are very different ways to bathe.

Reykjadalur hot riverA natural warm river higher up the valley. You hike about 3 km uphill to reach it, bathe from a wooden boardwalk, and there are no changing rooms. Entry is free, apart from parking at the trailhead. See our Reykjadalur guide.
Reykjaböð Hot SpringsA bathhouse with built pools at the start of the valley. There is no hike: you arrive, change, shower and step in. It has towels, lockers, an in-water bar and a restaurant, and you pay for a timed admission.
Doing bothThe hot river trail starts close by, so you can hike to the river first and finish with a soak at Reykjaböð. Allow two to three hours for the hike before your entry time.
