About Djúpavogskörin

Djúpavogskörin is a simple pool with a wooden deck, set in the hills a short walk from the road. It was put together by local people for their own use, as a place to soak with friends and family, and it is looked after by the community. It is not signposted from the Ring Road in a big way, so it feels like a discovery even though it is close to the highway.

This is one of the little-known hot springs of East Iceland. The pool sits behind a rock, so people driving past do not see it, and most visitors only find it because they went looking. Park, then look around for the trail before you walk on: it leads behind the hillock to the pool.

The pool is small, enough for about six or seven people. There is a rack behind it to hang towels and clothes, and the deck gives you somewhere dry to sit or change without stepping in the mud, though nothing is enclosed. On clear days you look out over the fjord and the mountains, with green moss on the slopes in summer.

It works in most weather, including snow, which is when many locals like it best. There is nothing else to see right at the pool. People come for the quiet and the view. Because it is small and unstaffed, treat it with care and leave it as you found it.
